He will follow up his lecture on October 30 (at the TMU, see above) with this solo musical performance. Open to all of the miracles and mistakes of live performance and the countless possibilities created by allowing the moment and the audience to guide him, he plays and performs his songs in their simplest form, taking us back to the moment of their creation. Following a centuries-old tradition - that of the Troubadours - Alkinoos travels from city to city, carrying with him the sensations, feelings, thoughts, experiences, dreams and realities that concern us all. His amalgamation of Cypriot and Greek influences, Byzantine, Classical and Rock musical elements, and his unique vocal delivery have made him popular not only in the Greek community at home and abroad but also among people of different ethnic backgrounds worldwide.

* Lecture: thwarted Hellenic visions for Cyprus (1954-1974), Mon 21-10-2024, 3PM Speaker: Dr George Kalpadakis, Visiting Professor, University of Vienna (Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies) Title: Voices of dissent: thwarted Hellenic visions for Cyprus (1954-1974) Date/time: Monday, October 21, 2024 | 3:00PM - 5:00PM Venue: room 208N, 1 Devonshire Place, Toronto, ON, M5S 3K7 Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto Registration: free but please register https://munkschool.utoronto.ca/event/voices-dissent-thwarted-hellenic-visions-cyprus-1954-1974 ABOUT THE EVENT Based on extensive archival research, the talk will delineate the trajectory of a latent vision for Cyprus propelled by ideas deviating from the postwar period's dominant government policies. These were discernible in the works of well-known Greek politicians, diplomats and men of letters throughout two decades crucial for resolving the crisis, starting with Athens' policy shift that led to its plea to the UN in 1954 and until the invasion of Cyprus twenty years later. It will address several underlying themes and neglected insights integral to this current: a commitment to championing Cyprus' liberation from British rule grounded in the dynamic movement for decolonization rather than in the calls for imminent Enosis; an investment in Greece's long-term position within the Western alliance in the context of the Cold War environment; finally, a deep, pragmatic and nuanced comprehension of the wide-ranging repercussions that an official adherence to the cause of Enosis would have in the postwar landscape for Greece's overarching national interests. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Dr George Kalpadakis is a senior researcher at the Academy of Athens (Modern Greek History Research Center) and a visiting professor at the University of Vienna (Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies). He has lectured on international relations, foreign policy analysis and diplomatic history at the Departments of Law and Political Science at Democritus University of Thrace and the Department of Political Science at the University of Crete. In 2022-23, he was a Lewis-Gibson Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Greek Studies (CGS) of the University of Cambridge, and in 2021-22, he was awarded a Fulbright Foundation grant to conduct research as a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University's Centre for European Studies (CES). He has been a visiting scholar at the Centre of Development Studies (CDS) of the University of Cambridge and a research fellow at the Hellenic Center for European Studies (EKEM) of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). His study on the Macedonian name dispute (3rd reprint, 2023) received the Academy of Athens Award in 2013. His books include: The Cyprus Conflict, 1954-1974 (3rd ed. 2024), The Balkan Confederation of Ioannis Kapodistrias (2023), Foreign Policy of Modern Greece, and Civil society and the contribution of Ernest Gellner (2018). He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Scandinavian Journal of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies and the European Journal of History and Culture. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of Millennium: Journal of International Studies. He holds a B.Sc. (Honours) from the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (HPS) of University College London (UCL), an M.Sc. from the Faculty of Economics (International Relations) of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a Ph.D. with Distinction from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Athens (2009). * Project presentation: The Open Eleusis team, Tue 15-10-2024 The HHF Chair in Modern Greek History and Hellenic Studies welcomes the Open Elefsis team to present their project: Title: Crafting the (de)industrialised culture of the city of Elefsina. Rusty and dusty tales ``made in Greece''. The Open Eleusis team Date/time: Tuesday, October 15, 2024, 11:30 - 13:30 Venue: History Department, Vari Hall 2183 York University Keele campus, Toronto And online: Join Zoom Meeting https://yorku.zoom.us/j/93511186684?pwd=3DXaQmOEVVDekYQ8Pdh3qenbJovtQ6EA.1 Meeting ID: 935 1118 6684 Passcode: 616642 More info: https://www.openeleusis.eu/?lang=en ELEFSINA Eleusina is the centre of a wider area whose industrial past and present have been under-researched. The city of Elefsina is a place of multiple uses and activities: industries, ports, a place of permanent and temporary residence for workers. It is also a place of various transitions: from a rural to an industrial and then a de-industrialized society, from a village to a city characterised by internal migration and refugeeism. These different characters of the city often coexist and this is what makes it unique. Refineries, distilleries, soap factories, paint industries, cement, steel and ammunition production, shipyards, are some of the activities that have taken place at various times on the coast of Eleusina. The systematic archeological excavations that brought to light the archeological interest of the region begun during the 19th century and continued for the entire 20th and until today. They took place simultaneously with the whole process of (de-)industrialization of the urban fabric, creating a condition of constant struggle for which line will prevail, as far as the character of the city is concerned. These two trends where constantly contradicting each other creating a kind of battlefield. It is no coincidence that Eleusina was proclaimed a Cultural Capital by stepping on that battlefield.

Lecture by Kostis Kornetis, U of Sheffield, Monday 29 April 2024, 6PM The Hellenic Heritage Foundation Annual Lecture hosts Dr Kostis Kornetis for its annual lecture. Title: 50 Years since the Greek Transition to Democracy Speaker: Dr Kostis Kornetis, Department of History, U. of Sheffield Date/time: Monday, April 29, 6:00–8:00 PM Venue: Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto Campbell Conference Facility, 1 Devonshire Place, Toronto Event online and in-person Registration: https://munkschool.utoronto.ca/event/50-years-greek-transition-democracy-appraisal Registration is free but mandatory Abstract: How do we look back at the 50 year since the transition to democracy in July 1974? What kind of democratic practice has Greece established ever since? What is the political heritage of those intense moments of near collapse under the ongoing conflict in Cyprus and the Turkish invasion? And what did it mean for the country's image and self-perception that the Left won the political and cultural hegemony, as is often claimed, for several decades as a result of the lingering trauma triggered by the dictatorship and its aftermath? What is certain is that while the Greek transition managed to at once democratize the country, put an end to the long post-civil war period, and pave the way to Greece’s accession to the European Union, it also set the rules of the political game in the country for the years to come. This talk started from this premise to look at how the memory of this real or supposed smooth change was challenged during the years of the Great Recession. While critics blamed the so-called ‘culture of Metapolitefsi’ and its underground currents for all present-day ills in that moment of intense crisis, others saw in 1974 unfinished business. Promises of a "New Metapolitefsi" on both right and left further proliferated, an invocation that made an appeal for a radical reboot that never really took place.
