Title: "Greek Jewry, The Holocaust, and Public Reckoning Today"
Speakers: Prof. Devin E. Naar (University of Washington in Seattle) and
Prof. Sakis Gekas (York University)
Date/time: Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 7pm via Zoom.
RSVP: https://yorku.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Yznm8uvWSiSzEwYULQRzVg
(free)
About the lecture:
Greece, home to one of world's oldest diasporic Jewish communities,
experienced one of Europe's highest death tolls in the Holocaust.
Remarkably, its small surviving population of Sephardic and
Romaniote Jews continued to build their lives and communities after WWII.
Today, Greece has one of Europe's few elected Jewish mayors,
possesses strong relations with Israel, and is increasingly
a site of Holocaust remembrance and pilgrimage.
Why was so little known about the Holocaust there for so long?
And what meaning does it have for contemporary Greeks, Jewish and non-Jewish?
About the speakers:
Devin E. Naar is the Isaac Alhadeff Professor in Sephardic Studies
and Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and History
at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he directs
the Sephardic Studies Program and is an affiliate faculty member
in the Hellenic Studies Program.
A former Fulbright Scholar to Greece, his book,
Jewish Salonica: Between the Ottoman Empire and Modern Greece,
won a 2016 National Jewish Book Award and the 2017 Edmund Keeley Prize
from the Modern Greek Studies Association.
Sakis Gekas is Associate Professor and
the Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair in Modern Greek History
at York University. He works on British colonialism and
state formation in Greece, the history of the Greek revolution
of 1821, and the history of Greeks in Canada.
His publications include
Veterans: The fighters of the 1821 Revolution during
the Period of King Otto's State, in Greek, (2022) and
Xenocracy. State, Class and Colonialism in the Ionian Islands, 1815-1864 (2017),
which was published in Greek in 2021.

Lili was born 1922, and we are thrilled to be presenting this work
in celebration of her centennial.
Epaggelma: Porni focuses on two different real stories
during "Junta" in Greece from 1967-1974.
This will be Elisseos Kyrillou's directorial debut
of his adapted screenplay and he is honoured to produce
this historical masterpiece to the Greek diaspora.
It is a provocative piece that will bring back memories
for some of our earlier generations and also portray the challenges

with a focus on inter-confessional relations and
the emergence of differentiated modernities in the Eastern Mediterranean
in the 18th-20th c.as well as the role of antiquity in the European imaginary.
About the talk:
Facing the increasing penetration of western catholic and
protestant missionaries in the Ottoman world after the Crimean war,
but also challenged by a growing Russian presence
in their plurisecular role of leader of the Rum,
i.e. the Eastern Christian Orthodox, within the Ottoman empire,
certain Greek-Orthodox clergymen decided to react
during the last quarter of the 19th c.
The talk studies their vision, what they accomplished (or not),
and what mark they left in Europe's orthodox borderlands.

* Who owns History? The case for the return of the Parthenon Marbles, Thu 24 March 2022, 12 noon
The Hellenic Initiative (THI) presents a webinar
Title: Who owns History? The case for the return of the Parthenon Marbles
Speaker: Geoffrey Robertson, Barrister and international judge
Date/time: Thursday 24 March 2022, 12 noon
Registration:
https://ca.thehellenicinitiative.org/event/webinar-who-owns-history/
Registration is free, but you must register to receive personalized link.
Donations are completely voluntary.
Added after webinar: If you missed the live webinar,
you can watch it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXYmJcvIXqM
Join us on Thursday, March 24th at 12:00 EST as we explore
one of the biggest questions in the world of arts and culture:
Who owns History, and should property taken without consent
be returned to their place of origin?
Robertson's judgment is uncompromising: Cultural heritage belongs
to the people of whose history it is a part of, unless its return
would impose danger to the artwork itself. And since the movement
for the restitution of cultural property is based on human rights
and international law, governments that want it back must show respect
for the rights of the peoples on whose behalf they make the claim.
Who Owns History? not only delves into the crucial debate over
the Marbles, but examines how the past can be experienced by everyone,
as well as by the people of the country of origin.
Guest speaker: Geoffrey Robertson, Barrister
has had a distinguished career as a trial and appellate counsel,
an international judge, and author of leading textbooks.
He has argued many landmark cases in media, constitutional
and criminal law, in the European Court of Justice;
the European Court of Human Rights;
the Supreme Court (House of Lords and Privy Council);
the UN War Crimes courts;
the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement
of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and in the highest courts
of many commonwealth countries.

* Greek Kore statue exhibit in ROM till September 2022
A remarkable painted statue of a young female (kore),
wearing a sleeved dress, is on display at the ROM.
Created in the late archaic Greek period and uncovered in 1886
is now on loan from the Acropolis Museum for a limited time.
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic
relations between Greece and Canada, the Acropolis Museum, with the permission
of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Hellenic Republic,
is lending Kore No. 670 to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).
The Kore will be on display at
the ROM from March 12, 2022 to September 25, 2022.
This remarkable figure of a maiden, or kore, is one of the most intricate and
highly decorated statues from ancient Greece. This kore, named Kore 670,
created between 520-510 BCE, is considered one of the most important sculptures
from the Acropolis in Athens because of its fine detail and preserved colour.
In many places the sculpture bears remnants of original paint, inviting us to
re-examine our understanding of white marble sculptures and the appeal of
colour in the Archaic Age.
This exquisite kore, which rarely leaves its home at the Acropolis Museum,
will be on display on the main floor at ROM till September 25, 2022.
