* A Foreign Country: a novel by Montreal-born Fotios Sarris Book title: A Foreign Country Author: Fotios Sarris, Professor in the Faculty of Communication and Design (FCAD), Professional Communication, at Ryerson University Released: November 17, 2020 Book: 416 pages, paperback Edition: Dumagrad 978-1-988887-04-3 Distributed in Canada to all bookstores by LPG/LitDistCo Approximate price: $19.95 CAD Available online at wordcity.ca https://wordcity.ca/author/fotios-sarris and at amazon https://www.amazon.ca/Foreign-Country-Fotios-Sarris/dp/1988887054 A Foreign Country: a novel by Montreal-born Fotios Sarris The child of Greek immigrants to Mile End, Montreal, struggles to cut bonds of tribe and family. A Foreign Country is a family epic that ranges from the wreckage of post-war Athens to Mile End in the seventies and beyond. Sarris writes in the tradition of Mordecai Richler, with his intimate understanding and colourful depiction of the streets and people of the Montreal neighbourhood. But his story moves into a political realm as well: A Foreign Country interrogates the neoliberal levelling of the world, and the West's uncertain stance towards its own strains of nationalism. A novel whose protagonist is striving for freedom poses the question: is it possible that freedom itself is what he is trying to escape? We live in a perennial and constantly renewable now, a present cut off from any past. Homelessness is the destiny of the world. So says a stranger in Thessaloniki who challenges the narrator's post-national values. It's a challenge towards the reader as well, in a book that tackles our assumptions about identity and nationalism. Sarris offers no easy answers in his ambitious, topical, and provocative debut. About Fotios Sarris Fotios Sarris was born in Montreal and grew up in the Mile End district. After completing his doctorate at the University of Toronto, he joined the faculty of Ryerson University, where he is a lecturer in the School of Professional Communication. A Foreign Country is his first novel. More info: David Hull 647 273-3658 info@dumagrad.com

* Lecture on Religion and Education in Greece, Wed 11-11-2020 4-5:30 PM The Hellenic Studies Initiative at the University of Toronto supported by the Hellenic Heritage Foundation organizes a lecture offered by the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, Centre of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies Title: Religion and Education in Greece Date/time: Wednesday, November 11th, 2020 from 4pm to 5:30pm EST. Speaker: Dr. Effie Fokas, ELIAMEP (Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy and London School of Economics Hellenic Observatory) Opening Remarks: Professor Phil Triadafilopoulos, Department of Political Science, University of Toronto Register: https://munkschool.utoronto.ca/ceres/event/29692/ (or uoft.me/hellenic2020) Registration is free, but you must register to receive your own zoom link. Abstract: The place of religion in Greece's public education system has been the focal point for intense debate in the last decade. The debate has seen contributions from a broad range of actors, including parents of students in the Greek public-school system, Greek political parties across the spectrum, the Orthodox Church of Greece, two especially vocal unions of theologians, the Greek Supreme Administrative Court, and the European Court of Human Rights. This lecture addresses the various relevant claims, concerns and actions of each of these actors and teases out ways in which the debate over religious education in Greece reveals perennial problems in the relationship between religion and national identity in the Greek context, and between church and state. About the speaker: Effie Fokas is a Senior Research Fellow at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) and a Research Associate of the London School of Economics Hellenic Observatory. She was Principal Investigator of the European Research Council-funded project on grassroots impact of European Court of Human Rights religious freedoms case law (Grassrootsmobilise), based at ELIAMEP. Her publications include Islam in Europe: Diversity, Identity and Influence, co-edited with Aziz Al-Azmeh; Religious America, Secular Europe?, co-authored with Peter Bergerand Grace Davie; The European Court of Human Rights and Minority Religions, co-edited with James T. Richardson; and About the moderator: Phil Triadafilopoulos is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. He teaches courses in political science and public policy at the University of Toronto Scarborough and the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy and conducts research in the areas of immigration and citizenship policy in Europe and North America. * Listen to the sound of Agia Sofia, 500+ years ago Scholars at Stanford University recreate what a Christian choir have sounded inside Agia Sofia of Constantinople, when it was what is was built for: a Christian church. This research was pursued much earlier than the current sad and backward developments of converting Agia Sofia to a mosque, but they are as timely as ever. In brief, researchers (back in 2016) went to Agia Sofia, studied how the sounds made by popping balloons spread and gather in Agia Sofia, and designed a digital filter that takes a local sound and converts it to what it would sound inside Agia Sofia, given the specifics of the geometry, space and shape, architecture, materials, etc. Then, back in the USA, they had the choir Capella Romana, a vocal ensemble based in Portland, Oregon, singing Christian (Byzantine and other) hymns, passed their sounds through the filter and recorded the result. Essentially, the acoustics of Agia Sofia are imprinted in the end sound result. cancelled (until further update) due to measures for COVID-19 * Lecture on Greeks abroad right to vote, Sat 14 Mar 2020, 6 PM Public Lecture (In Greek): Title: The right to vote for residents abroad. Towards a new relationship between Greece and the Greeks of the diaspora?” Date/time: Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. Venue: Polymenakeion Cultural Centre, 30 Thorncliffe Park Dr Speaker: Professor Sakis Gekas, Hellenic Heritage Foundation Chair in Modern Greek History, York University. Summary: In December 2019, the Greek Parliament approved with a very broad majority, rare for parliamentary history, legislation that allows Greeks abroad to exercise their voting rights from their place of residence. This decision of the Greek parliament provides the political system for the first time in the history of the country and its diaspora the potential to form a new relationship with Greeks abroad, inviting them to participate to the top democratic process from their place of residence. At the same time, this institutional and political change can lead Greeks abroad to a new relationship with their country of origin through their participation in the political process. Citing historical examples and cases of other countries that have given their citizens abroad the right to vote, the talk puts forward for discussion the opportunities and challenges that this change poses for Greek communities around the world.
