Nevertheless, it is not complete. The extreme weakness of gravity or the nature of Dark Matter are examples of puzzles that suggest the presence of new physics. Traditionally, we look for answers at colliders. In the last few years, we realized some of these answers may come from black holes or from precision experiments that look for the tiny signals with which new physics may manifest itself. About the speaker Asimina Arvanitaki (PhD Stanford University, 2008) is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Aristarchos Chair in Theoretical Physics at Perimeter Institute, where she has been a faculty member since 2014. Arvanitaki is a particle physicist who specializes in designing new experiments to test fundamental theories beyond the Standard Model. These experiments rely on the latest developments in metrology, such as atomic clocks, and the optical trapping and cooling of macroscopic objects. She has also shown that astrophysical black holes can probe the presence of ultra-light particles through the effect of black hole superradiance. In 2016, she received the New Horizons Prize in Fundamental Physics from the Breakthrough Foundation.

* The Hellenic Initiative, fire relief campaign This has been a difficult and challenging couple of weeks for our community both in Toronto and back home in our beloved Greece. The tragic events which took place on Sunday, July 22nd in the heart of Greektown on the Danforth were compounded by the disastrous fires which broke the day after, claiming the lives of too many. The death toll from Greece's deadliest fire disaster has risen to 96. Several more people are still hospitalized, some of them in critical condition. To date, this horrific catastrophe continues to rally thousands to respond with humanitarian and economic assistance but more is still needed. The Hellenic Initiative Canada https://ca.thehellenicinitiative.org/ , or THI, is a global charity focused on Greece's economic recovery, and is appealing to society at-large for assistance in responding to the terrible loss of life and property from the wildfires that have afflicted the outlying areas of Athens to the east and west. THI is working with authorities on the ground and proven NGOs to provide assistance that is both effective and responsible. All funds raised will be used for this relief effort and THI will report back on all contributions and how they have been utilized in Greece to be consistent with their ideals of Accountability, Transparency and Responsibility. If you feel strongly about helping in these relief efforts, we encourage you to make a Donation directly through the Hellenic Initiative Canada website: https://ca.thehellenicinitiative.org/donate-now-wildfire-relief-fund/
