long term recovery.
THI Canada's mission is to mobilize the generosity of Canadians to
help the most vulnerable men, women, and children in Greece brought
low by the economic crisis. All funds raised in Canada are used to
support the programs selected by THI Canada that provide food,

Abstract of talk
Novel Directions in the Search for New Physics
The Standard Model has been successful in describing phenomena that
we observe from galactic down to subatomic scales. Nevertheless, it is
not complete. The extreme weakness of gravity or the nature of Dark Matter
are examples of puzzles that suggest the presence of new physics.
Traditionally, we look for answers at colliders. In the last few years, we
realized some of these answers may come from black holes or from
precision experiments that look for the tiny signals with which new
physics may manifest itself.
About the speaker
Asimina Arvanitaki (PhD Stanford University, 2008) is the Stavros
Niarchos Foundation Aristarchos Chair in Theoretical Physics
at Perimeter Institute, where she has been a faculty member since 2014.
Arvanitaki is a particle physicist who specializes in designing
new experiments to test fundamental theories beyond the Standard Model.
These experiments rely on the latest developments in metrology,
such as atomic clocks, and the optical trapping and cooling
of macroscopic objects. She has also shown that
astrophysical black holes can probe the presence of ultra-light
particles through the effect of black hole superradiance.
In 2016, she received the New Horizons Prize in Fundamental Physics
from the Breakthrough Foundation.

* The Hellenic Initiative, fire relief campaign
This has been a difficult and challenging couple of weeks for our community
both in Toronto and back home in our beloved Greece.
The tragic events which took place on Sunday, July 22nd in the heart of
Greektown on the Danforth were compounded by the disastrous fires which
broke the day after, claiming the lives of too many. The death toll from
Greece's deadliest fire disaster has risen to 96. Several more people are
still hospitalized, some of them in critical condition.
To date, this horrific catastrophe continues to rally thousands to respond
with humanitarian and economic assistance but more is still needed.
The Hellenic Initiative Canada https://ca.thehellenicinitiative.org/ , or
THI, is a global charity focused on Greece's economic recovery, and is
appealing to society at-large for assistance in responding to the terrible
loss of life and property from the wildfires that have afflicted the
outlying areas of Athens to the east and west.
THI is working with authorities on the ground and proven NGOs to provide
assistance that is both effective and responsible.
All funds raised will be used for this relief effort and THI will report
back on all contributions and how they have been utilized in Greece to be
consistent with their ideals of Accountability, Transparency and
Responsibility.
If you feel strongly about helping in these relief efforts, we encourage you
to make a Donation directly through the Hellenic Initiative Canada website:

Hellenic Studies at York University, the Greek Canadian History Project
and the Immigrec Stavros Niarchos Foundation Project announce the

will take place
Dates: May 3-5, 2018
Venue: York University
CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline for submission: March 1, 2018
Submit: abstract of no more than 500 words
Notification: March 15, 2018
Programme announcement: April 15, 2018
Website: https://greekcanadianstudiesconference.wordpress.com/
We seek proposals for individual papers or sessions
that are relevant and contribute to any aspect of
Greek-Canadian Studies from the fields of History, Literature,
Linguistics, Language, Education, Anthropology, Sociology,
Political Science, Journalism and Media and the Fine Arts,
including Film Studies and Visual Arts.
A central theme of the conference will be how to define
Greek-Canadian Studies.
We welcome papers that will present work scholarly or artistic,
which is not merely produced by Greek-Canadians, but includes
Greek-Canadian content and addresses issues relevant to
the Greek-Canadian experience.
Comparative and interdisciplinary approaches are particularly
encouraged, especially in comparison to Greek-American and
Greek-Australian Studies; while Greek communities in Canada
are not necessarily comparable to those in the United States
or Australia, scholars working in Greek-Canadian Studies
may find similarities with Greek-American or Greek-Australian Studies.
We are delighted that Professor Thomas W. Gallant
(https://history.ucsd.edu/people/faculty/gallant.html),
Nicolas Family Chair of Modern Greek History,
University of California, San Diego, will give

(https://immigrec.com/en) on the history of Greek immigration to
Canada from the 1950s to 1970s, funded by the Stavros Niarchos
Foundation. Graduate students are particularly encouraged to apply;
the conference will try and cover expenses for their travel and
accommodation.

"Worlds Apart" is Greek drama film directed by *Christoforos Papakaliatis*
that consists of three separate narratives, each following a love story
between a foreigner and a Greek.
Each story represents a different generation falling in love during a time
of socio-economic turmoil that dominates Southern Europe as a whole, only
to connect as a single story in the end.
The film was the biggest Greek box office hit in the past ten years and the
first Greek film in years to achieve successful theatrical distribution in
New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles.
*Academy Award winner JK Simmons* stars in the film, as do a number of
well-known Greek actors.
We are grateful to the support of the following individuals and companies
for their sponsorship of this event:

Fleet Complete - Tony Lourakis
