* Munk debates on Capitalism with Yannis Varoufakis, Wed 04 Dec 2019 Munk debates on Capitalism features Debaters: Yannis Varoufakis, Katrina vanden Heuvel, Arthur Brooks, David Brooks Date/time: Wednesday 4 December 2019 6:30 - 8:30 PM Venue: Roy Thompson Hall Toronto, ONTARIO Info: https://www.greekevents.ca/details.php?eventid=995 Tickets: wait list $40-$100 or watch a free livestream of our December 4 event on our website.https://munkdebates.com/tickets https://tickets.masseyhallroythomsonhall.com Abstract: The capitalist system is broken. It's time to try something different. There is a growing belief in western societies that the current capitalist system no longer works for average people. Economic inequality is rampant. Life expectancy is falling. The environment is being destroyed for profits. Political power is wielded by wealthy elites and big business, not the people. For capitalism's critics, the answer is a top to bottom reform of the ``free market'' along more socialist and democratic lines. For proponents of capitalism, it is the engine of economic and social progress, full stop. Not only has capitalism made all of us materially better off, its ideals are responsible for everything from women's rights to a cleaner environment to greater political freedoms. The answer to society's current ills is more capitalism, more economic freedom, and more free markets.

* Petition not to move the archeaological findings at the Venizelou metro (subway) station in Thessaloniki Recently, the Greek government (prime minister Mitsotakis) decided to move the archeaological findings at the Venizelou metro (subway) station in Thessaloniki away of their original position, to let the construction company (Attiko Metro) work for the station, then place again the findings in the area. Giannis Mpoutaris, the former mayour of Thessaloniki, opposes the movement of archeaological findings at the Venizelou metro station in Thessaloniki. The opposition (Syriza) is also against the moving of the findings, and they say that the moving is just a way for the construction company to claim extra costs. Mpoutaris claims that it is already decided (by the highest admin course, Sumboulio Epikrateias) that the construction company should work for the station, *around* the findings without moving them away. Changing already taken decision, only increases costs, while moving the findings does not show respect to the cultural heritage of the city. Archaeologists say that moving the findings involves a great risk, and that they will never go back to the original position, while the original look and atmosphere will not be preserved. There is a petition organized by those opposing the moving of the findings.
