Bio.

shorter version

Sageev Oore is a pianist, professor of computer science, clown, computer animation researcher, music teacher and busker to name a few things.

As an undergraduate student in Mathematics in Halifax, he performed as guest soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia (under the baton of the late Georg Tintner) and his recordings of classical to early 20th century piano music were broadcast on a CBC special. Sageev completed an MSc in Neural Networks under the supervision of Geoffrey Hinton, after which he spent time exploring a wide range of interdisciplinary performing, including studies in extended vocal technique and theatre. Interdisciplinary performances have ranged from wildly careening clown pieces involving massive amounts of Jello, to readings of texts by his sister writer/photographer Jasmine Oore.

Sageev completed his PhD at the University of Toronto, under the supervision of Geoffrey Hinton and Demetri Terzopoulos, designing an interface for computer puppetry to create animation in real-time. He has performed with this system as part of an invited presentation at the Subtle Technologies conference.

Sageev performs as pianist/keyboardist/accordionist frequently with free-improvising ensemble the Woodchoppers Association (at Hillside Music Festival, Guelph Jazz Festival, Webcast at Manta with Gord Downie), with his brother, saxophonist and composer Daniel Oore (at DuMaurier Jazz Festival, CBC Radio) and with many other friends including drummer Dave Clark (of the Gord Downie Band), performer Elana Freeman, singer Fides Krucker (at the Music Gallery, at the Royal Ontario Museum in collaboration with painter Vivien Reiss), singer Stella Walker & more.

His all-embracing love of music has been demonstrated in each of his recent, successful concerts of avant-garde Polka music (at the Cameron House, Toronto), funky soulful improvised music with Les Blanc Brillants Brulants (with co-busker Dave Clark, Daniel Oore and guest Kenny Kirkwood), new Yiddish music as part of David Buchbinder's ensemble at Ashkenaz (at Toronto Harbourfront Centre), and of French music from Acadian fiddle music to Ravel and Brel (with Daniel Oore at Saint Mary's Art Gallery). His recent show at Artword Theatre (Toronto) with Fides Krucker and percussionist Rick Sacks was listed by NOW magazine as one of the top 10 shows of 2002 in Toronto, and all three were nominated for a Dora Award for their musical sound design/arrangements/composition for this piece.
