U of T computer science alumnus Ilya Sutskever (HBSc 2005, MSc 2007, PhD 2013) will lead research at OpenAI – a $1 billion nonprofit dedicated to artificial intelligence research.
Sutskever completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor Geoffrey Hinton, who is widely regarded as the "Godfather of Deep Learning". Together Hinton, Sutskever, and Alex Krizhevsky (HBSc 2007, MSc 2009) co-founded a neural networks company, which was later acquired by Google in 2013.
Researchers at OpenAI will be strongly encouraged to publish their work, whether as papers, blog posts, or code, and any patents will be shared with the world.

Computational Linguistics Approach to detecting Alzheimer’s disease
Assistant Professor and computer science graduate Dr. Frank Rudzicz (PhD 2011) has led a study that will result in easier, more cost-effective and accurate assessment in dementia screening. A scientist with the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, UHN, Dr. Rudzicz and his colleagues have discovered how to diagnose Alzheimer's disease with more than 82 per cent accuracy by evaluating the interplay between four linguistic factors, using hundreds of individual variables; and developing automated technology to detect these impairments. The research is published in the December issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.
