Working from home. Where is this trend going today? Is it becoming more popular or less popular? You may want to look at some prominent tech companies to help with your investigation.

Canadian cellular companies charge their customers one of the highest fees in the world. Why is this so? Are these fees justified just because of the country’s size? What would it take to lower these fees?

CEO Age. Why are CEO’s so young these days in comparison? Is it possible for someone to be too young to be a CEO? How does having a young CEO affect company dynamics?

Offline Policy. Some CEO’s are suggesting an offline policy after certain hours or weekends – meaning that workers should not be emailing or doing work during these hours. Is this necessarily a good thing? Or is this a backward step? You may want to consider how the 9-5 job has evolved over the years and what it means today to work after-hours.

Agile methodologies. Does it work in all environments? Are developer teams moving towards agile development or away from it in recent years? What is the reasoning behind their movements? Research and discuss.

Unlimited Vacation. Some companies like Netflix and Virgin allow for some form of unlimited vacation days for their employees. What companies operate this way? How does it work? What is the rationale? Research and discuss

Office perks. Some companies like Google and Apple provide free meals and recreational facilities on-site at their offices. Why do they do this? Does it work? Research and discuss.

Biometrics. Many electronic devices today use biometrics (fingerprint, retina recognition, facial recognition) as “passwords”. Some studies claim that biometrics are “easier to hack” than regular passwords. Research and discuss this statement. Data Privacy. Today, many large companies like Google, Microsoft, and Apple sell your data to advertisers. Discuss privacy policies of these companies. Do you think its fair that these companies “sell your privacy” for millions of dollars? Will this hinder or facilitate how we browse the web in the future?

Gender pay gap. There is an extensive focus on “women in computing”. However, many women in computing get paid less than their male counterpart, even with the same education and skillset. Explain the “tech gender wage gap”. Are companies hiring female programmers to save their money? If you disagree with this statement, then explain reasons why female programmers are being hired. 

Social Networking for Professional Connections. We are on multiple social networking sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, and so forth. Do you believe that these sites help you find legitimate jobs and professional connections? Why do you use these sites versus traditional method to progress your professional agenda? Are these sites necessary to find jobs in today’s world? It would be interesting if you take the negative approach. 

Digital Piracy. Canadian phone/internet companies like Bell and Rogers track your internet usage. If you download or upload illegal content then you might be fined a large amount of money.  Do you believe that digital piracy should be legalized? What effects will it have on the consumers, businesses, and the market?

Outsourcing. Numerous companies use outsourcing to increase efficiency. However, there have been concerns with security, loss of control, and so forth. (negatives) In contrast, it has been claimed that outsourcing reduces cost, maximizes resources, etc. (Positives) Choose a side. Explain outsourcing. Does outsourcing fosters or hinders company dynamics? What is the future of outsourcing?

E-Waste. China produces and gathers a significant amount of e-waste. This is the place where your electronic devices go to die. Research and discuss the influence on the local communities, businesses, health risks, and so forth. Why is China the “e-waste capital” of the world? Discuss the policies put in place to tackle e-waste in China. In your opinion, how should China cope with e-waste?

MOOCS like coursera have become very popular. Will they ever replace higher education?
