My research is in computational linguistics and natural language processing, with applications in health and medicine, in the social sciences, and in the humantites. I’ve supervised more than 70 theses and dissertations. I’m the editor of the Synthesis series of books on Human Language Technologies. I’ve received two awards for excellence in teaching and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Association for Artificial Intelligence. I was Chair of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics for 2004–05 and Treasurer of the Association for 2008–17. I became a Fellow of the association in 2019. .
