No Relief
The normally phlegmatic Mr. Hart was deeply upset. 24 hours has passed
without results, and even if the rabies could not be corroborated, he was
determined to see that his son received vaccine. At the suggestion of some
friends, he organized a comprehensive search party, zealously fanning out
in circles around the supermarket. They knocked each door, inspected every
dog, came back with empty-hand. Although the Harts were sick with worry(they
had to be coerced into going to sleep), the little Bobby seemed in high
spirits. The excruciating vigil continued.

Fair-weather friends--The general was chagrined to learn that so many
of his supposed supporters were actually fair-weather friends.
(unreliable, they fail you in time of distress)
