Projects
Maple License
Student bought his own maple license and asked the it be
installed on the comps servers. I've talked to core and John about
this. There are certain restrictions placed on core on what they can
install on departmentally shared server. There is also some question
whether the license will allow the software to be installed on a shared
server, even if its use can be restricted, I'm looking into this. I've
asked around, but there seems little interest in other groups in
getting maple for the department. I'd like to get a better idea of the
theorygroups level of interest as well.
iPad "Other" Space
Space labled as being used by "other" growing for no apparent
reason. Turns out to be a bug that showed up in iOS5. There is
currently no fix for the bug. To reclaim the space, the iPad needs to
be reset to default settings and everything can then be reloaded from
backup. Its time consuming, but "other" space shrinks back down to
reasonable amounts. Documentation needs to be written up.
Apple Warrenty
Verified that the power adapter is covered by apple waranty.
Waiting for Wah-Ming to find paperwork to show purchasing date.

Ordering Magic Track Pad.
Looking into new laptop and printer.
Desktops
Two students have agreed to get the firts of the desktops and give me
feedback as to how they are progressing with them. I have two more
studnets who are interested in getting a desktop as well, but I'm still
sorting out the details with them. I'm also working on different
mounting options and getting some offices set up with new netwroking in
preparation for the desktops.
WebDav on iPad
Looking into webdav applications on the iPad. So far I've
tested:
WebDav Nav, OverTheAir, SuperFiles, and DS file. Non of them seem to
work with our samba server. But webdav on safari works, so I don't
think the broblem is on the samba server.
New Machine
with Audio
Toni is starting a new project and she needs a machine that can do
audio. I'm setting her up with a Windows 7 machine.
OS X Lion
Upgrade
The department may purchase a number of os x lion upgrade liceses, if
we buy more than twenty we get them half off. I need to get intouch
with Mac users to see who is running snow leopard and if they would
like to upgrade to lion.
PDF Reader
Allan is having ongoing problems with acroread opening pdf documents.
Sometimes it shows up as a blank page and nothing more. There are also
often defunced acroread processes left behind. Trying alternate pdf
viewers, xpdf first.
Switch
Arkadev's switch broke. Connected ltsp directly to drop and he is using
wifi for his laptop for now, but I need to either get him a new switch
or a splitter.

Laptop
Laptop reinstallation after it was badly infected. Reinstallation ran
into a problem, our version of Windows doesn't have the drivers for his
laptop's hard drive. Need to either install something else (ex:
Ubunutu), have him find the original disk that came with the laptop, or
figure out a way to slipstream the driver to onto Windows. Waiting to
hear back from Arkadev
OS X Files with No File
Extensions
OS X files with no file extensions being treated as executable by
default, need to figure out a way to get OS X to open them as text
files. Normally OS X handles this using meta data associated with the
files, but Samba has been configured not to store meta data since it
caused problems for some operating systems.
Updating Documentation
I'm
working on updating the documentation on this site, especially the
sections relevant to visitors and new students/faculty. Ultimately, the
plan is to also make it searchable.
