| The Identity Of Hellenic Culture | ||
|
The essence of a nation is its culture. Through culture nations develop their physiognomy during the centuries and through culture they conquer their place amongst peoples. We Hellenes are grateful to our forefathers for the Civilization they offered to us. But we are also grateful to our contemporary artists and scientists for all their deeds and achievements in an era that refuses and rescinds humanism at its core. We do know that our ancient, byzantine, contemporary and modern culture is the splendid achievement of the Greek people throughout the millennia of their existence. Being an artist, some might accuse me as biasing in favor of Culture. I am aware of the risk. All the same I defy it because I know that deep in mankind's consciousness it is strongly impressed that Hellenic Culture is the field where Hellenic spirit prevails and proves its continuum through time.
Referring to Hellenic Culture I mean our ancient, byzantine, contemporary and modern culture; its force arises from the depths of the centuries and reaches our times, always fertile and creative, always genuine.
It is Homer, Sappho, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides... It is Pheidias, Lysippos, Praxiteles, Giannoulis Halepas and Takis... It is Iktinos, Mnesicles, Constantinides and Kandylis... It is Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Vessarion, Plethon Gemistos and Kastoriades... It is Romanus Melodos, Kallas, Metropoulos, Skalkotas, Hadjidakis and Theodorakis... It is Apellis, El Greco, Chrysa and Kounellis, it is Hippocrates and Papanikolaou... And above all, it is this fascinating Hellene, the eternal voyager, Ulysses. All of them are leading lights who express one and only culture through generations. A culture that is characterized by the quest, fertility, dispute and creativity, concepts constantly focusing to Man. A culture that is an endless voyage to the utmost limits of the world...
