The Friends of Linguistics At the University of Toronto [flaut] announces an upcoming lecture by: ANA-TERESA PEREZ-LEROUX, Associate Professor, University of Toronto, entitled: THE CASE OF DR. SPOCK vs LINGUISTIC THEORY or On things young children (don?t) say Toddlers, who speak in short sentences, and preschoolers, who can speak too much, sometimes omit a sentence?s direct object in required contexts. [while drawing] (age: 5) In this talk Dr. Perez-Leroux will explore the natural history of children's object drop sentences. She will consider two approaches to this phenomenon, the grammatical and the pragmatic. Are children different from adults in their knowledge about what needs to be said explicitly in conversation, or on what they know about grammatical operations?
