Supplementary Perl material
If you are still looking for extra help with Perl, you might try some of
these suggestions. If you have an online resource that you have found
useful, please let me know and I will add it to my list.
Recommended
Bradley M. Kuhn has written a fairly good tutorial called Picking Up
Perl. It probably isn't worth printing out the whole thing.
Online tutorials
I hunted around for some online tutorials on Perl. I have not read all
of them, so you may or may not find them useful. We will not be
covering CGI programming at all, so be wary of Perl tutorials that
focus on web programming.
Books
You should not need to buy a book to learn enough Perl in this course. If
you do want to get a book, here are my favourite references.
- Programming Perl by Larry Wall, Tom Christiansen and
Randal L. Schwartz is my main reference book on Perl. I have the
2nd edition. It has a fairly good introductory chapter.
- Learning Perl is
more of a tutorial style book. I'm not really familiar with it.
- Perl and CGI
Programming by Elizabeth Castro of PeachPit Press. If you
want a step-by-step guide to using Perl for CGI programming, this
is a great book.
