Welcome!

I am Recep Colak, a first year PhD student at the University of Toronto. I got my BSc degree from the Department of Computer Engineering (a misnomer for Computer Science) at Bilkent University in 2006. Then I moved to Canada to get my MSc degree at Simon Fraser University through the CIHR/MSFHR scholarship program. After finishing my MSc degree in 2008, I explored the industry a bit and finally came back to research.

I am working in bioinformatics and in particular on the genomic variation analysis. I am co-supervised by Dr. Michael Brudno and Dr. Philip Kim. Toronto seems to be a terrific place to learn and do bioinformatics research. I am grateful to NSERC for funding my research through an Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS-D3). You can find further details about my work in the research page.

I am happily married to Pinar and we take care of a little monster named Luna. Other than research and my family, I enjoy reading (history, technology, bio-it, popular science, politics etc.), sports, watching movies from all around the world (not just Hollywood) and exploring ethnic cuisines (both Vancouver and Toronto are very multicultural cities and hence good for that purpose). I also enjoy attending public speaking clubs/seminars.
