User information from flaps for NA group

This file lists some information written by flaps about how to use computers he has set up for the NA group.

Group Ubuntu linux workstation

If you are a member of the unix group cccgrp, combgrp, enrigrp, or krjgrp at CSLab, you will automatically have a unix account on dahlquist in BA 4205. Changes you make to your password or full name (with 'passwd' or 'chfn' respectively) on a CSLab machine will be reflected on the lab machines some time later that day. (In an emergency you can change your password locally on these machines too, and/or send e-mail to flaps for assistance.)

To log in to dahlquist from outside the department, you need to log in first to a publicly-accessible machine inside CS (e.g. apps0.cs.toronto.edu). From there, you can log in to dahlquist using the full name "dahlquist.nas.sandbox".

Your home directory is shared with CSLab via NFS. /w/20 is also shared via NFS. Other CSLab directories (e.g. web documents, /var/mail) are generally not available, but you can always log in to a CSLab host in a terminal window with ssh. (For e-mail, also see Reading your CSLab mail on an NAS sandbox machine.)

You will find the "terminal" application in the Applications menu under Accessories.

To log out, in the "System" menu choose "Quit", and in the resulting panel choose "Log Out". (Please don't turn the machine off!)

There are some separate notes about using the projector in BA 4206 with dahlquist.

To use a different window manager, in the bottom-left of the login screen click on "Options" and choose "Select Session...". "GNOME" is the default setting. I've added "twm", which runs twm, and "xinitrc", which just runs $HOME/.xinitrc and you can put whatever you like in there (probably including a window manager). Please ask me about adding further entries or installing other window managers. (After you type your name and password it asks you whether you want this to be the default setting, or "just for this session".) You can always log out by killing the X server with ctrl+alt+backspace.

You can run vmware on dahlquist. [vmware instructions]

Any questions, please ask (preferably by e-mail).
