Information for New Students (September, 2001)

Welcome to the University of Toronto's Department of Computer Science. On this page, I have gathered some useful bits of information for new graduate students who are interested in theoretical computer science or applied discrete mathematics.

The theory area meeting of the orientation for new graduate students will be held on Tuesday, September 4 at 2:00p.m. in room 1101 of the Sandford Fleming Building at 10 King's College Road.

Seminars

The department has a series of theory seminars and combinatorics seminars. During these seminars, a researcher, usually from outside the university, talks for about 50 minutes about his or her recent work, and then there is some time for questions. All graduate students are welcome to attend. Announcements of upcoming seminars can be found on the newsgroup ut.dcs.theory. Announcements of seminars in all areas of computer science are posted to the newsgroup ut.dcs.seminars and to the web on this page. The mathematics department posts information about combinatorics seminars (and other mathematics seminars) to this page. (You can also access information about math seminars by typing finger seminars@math.)

Last year, there was also a theory seminar exclusively for graduate students. Each week, students took turns presenting topics that they found interesting to the others in a fairly informal setting. This student seminar will probably be revived soon. If you want to receive announcements about this seminar, send email to Antonina Kolokolova. A similar graph theory student seminar was organized by Harold Connamacher.

Mailing Lists

The theorygroup and combinatorics mailing lists are used to distribute information to people at the University who are interested in theoretical computer science and combinatorics. If your supervisor is in one of these areas, then you should be added to the appropriate list(s). Prof. Molloy maintains the combinatorics mailing list, so please contact him to get added to it. To be added to the theorygroup list, please contact Prof. Rackoff.

Web Resources

Here is a list of web pages that may be of interest to students of theoretical computer science. There are links to bibliographies of computer science papers, various computer science organizations, some resources within the University of Toronto, and an index of other computer science department web pages.

There are also departmental web pages for the Applied Discrete Math Research Group and for the Theory of Computation Research Group.

The Fields Institute

The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (at 222 College Street, just around the corner from the CS department) sometimes has workshops, courses and seminars that may be of interest to computer science students.
