The common underlying theme of my research is process-, agent- and goal-oriented modeling in the context of collaborative knowledge management. Currently, I am especially interested in two specific streams of research:
- Agent-Oriented Analysis and Design of Social Computing Applications
With more and more information being produced by society, we increasingly depend on computer algorithms to prioritize and sort out relevant information for us (such as Google’s search for the internet). In turn, computer algorithms increasingly depend on social and human activities, such as the implicit “voting” of internet users by setting links (Google’s PageRank algorithm [52]), to achieve their purpose. Together, these systems constitute highly complex, compound actors in which the boundaries between social and computer systems are increasingly eroding, and in which human knowledge gets embodied in the systems' structure.
By focussing on social factors, social computing applications such as social sharing, social search or social authoring applications represent an especially interesting technology for facilitating knowledge transfer between distributed individuals and groups. On a more conceptual level, social computing applications provide the software services, tools and instruments that support and facilitate social interactions. Due to the compound social-technological systems' structure, important factors in social computing applications are the stakeholders, and their acceptance, motivation and goals. As a result, analyzing the motivations and goals from different interdependent stakeholders is critical. In my research, I am interested in agent- and goal-oriented conceptual modeling techniques for the analysis and design of social interactions in social computing applications.
Selected Paper: Analyzing knowledge transfer effectiveness - An agent-oriented approach.pdf
- Intentional Structures and Representations for the Web
Many activities on the web are driven by high-level goals of users, such as "planning a trip" or "buying a product". Yet, the web - in its current form - is largely non-intentional, i.e. it lacks explicit intentional structures. As a result, users have to cognitively translate their high-level goals into (often non-intentional) search queries, tags, concepts or classifications. This makes it hard for web applications (such as search engines) to capture, recognize, refine and act upon users' high-level goals. I am interested in the development of techniques and algorithms to capture and guide user intent on the web, the development of semi-automatic techniques for the construction of intentional representations (e.g. collaboratively constructed goal graphs) and the development of instruments to associate goals and goal graphs with (textual or multi-media) ressources.
