I am a 2nd year Master's student at the University of Toronto's Department of Computer Science in the Computational Linguistics group under the supervision of Gerald Penn. I received a B. Math in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo in 2005. While at Waterloo I worked several co-op terms (4 month internships) with Sybase iAnywhere Solutions on projects relating to database query processing. I grew up in Yellowknife, NWT (Canada).
I arrived at Toronto with an interest specifically in natural language generation, and am presently working on statistical parsing of German (using the TüBa-D/Z corpus). I have a general interest in novel algorithms and in programming languages, and amuse myself at trying to learn history and sociology.
In my time working on computational linguistics, I have been especially inspired and influenced by the works of Daniel Marcu, Hal Daumé III, Dan Klein, and Ryan McDonald, as well as the many great students in the University of Toronto Computational Linguistics group.
I have recently completed my Masters thesis: Statistical Parsing with Context-Free Filtering Grammar.
