There are a few pictures from Karelian Ithsmus on the page that I have made. Soon, as I scan or recieve more photos I will post them. Some of these pictures are taken in Yappilia, some in Kirilovskoe, some near Orehovo and Sosnovo. Mostly they are pictures from about 150 km radius around Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

I also work as a volunteer in Civil defense and emergency rescue for accidents and things like that. Anyone who wishes to be a pen-pal please contact me by e-mail at "" Thanks,,, John

Thank you very much for this site. I have always liked Rublev's Trinity. A first I did not know what it was. Then I learned a little about it. At the present time I am participating in a program called Renew 2000. The parish is broken up into small groups to try to get the feeling of community that the early church had. For our next meeting we are suppose to bring something that represents community. I bough a copy of The Trinity in Taize France about 15 years ago and that is what I am bringing. I think this Icon really depicts comunity.

The Northwest part of Russia is beautiful. In fact my parents lived in Viipuri (Vyborg). They had just bought a small farm 14 km east of the city when, in 1944, Russians came over and took most of Karelia. They were part of the 420,000 people kicked out of their homes. In 1941, when the Finns recaptured Karelia from the Russians, my father was with a group of Finns in charge of kicking the remaining Russians off the Ladoga islands. My father was very smart in preserving these actions on photographs which I am making available on my site. My father was the first to ring the Valaam bells when the Finns took it back from the Russians. I think you will find the pictures very interesting, guaranteed. They are a part of the unwritten history of Karelia, but now they are part of the written history of that area.

I was very fortunte to have been able to visit both Russia and the Ukraine back in January of 1991. This was while these countries were still under the Communist system of government. Then I was lucky to go to Moscow, in February of 1992, just a few months after the failed coup attempt of August 1991! I feel that I was able to capture the old system in its last days, and the new Russia in its infancy.

El Dorado SoftWorld is a small company that provides billing software to metered utilities; Water, Gas, Electric, Sewer, Garbage, Steam. etc. Most of our users provide service to 200 - 10,000 customer accounts. We presently have 1,200+ users in the U.S. Most of our users are local municipalities, water or gas companies, water associations, etc. We are considering the translation of our latest Windows95 version to Russian for marketing in Russia and the neighboring republics. What we wish to determine is if there would in-fact be a market for our product if translated to Russian. Can you suggest how we might be able to get answers to questions like the following ? 1. Outside of the big cities, are services like water, garbage, etc. provided by local government or utility companies, with billing sent to each household ? 2. How are customers billed ? Monthly, Quarterly, Annually ? Are they metered ? 3. Are computers used to manage business/government at the local level ? 4. Are computers & software for infrastructure related installations obtained through normal business channels, or through aid organizations ? i.e. USAid, CARE, etc. 5. How would one market specialized software such as this in Russia and the republics ? 6. Is there a need for Utility Billing Software in Russian ? Can you suggest where I might be able to obtain answers to questions such as these ? Thank you for your help

I am taking a class on the former Soviet Union and its republics. For a research paper, I am trying to gather as much information on Christianity in this part of the world. Does it exist? I know it does, but why so little? Many more you know of any links or areas I may want to see on the internet to find out more. Thanks!

I took these photos during a three week trip to Russia with the organization I work for. The purpose of the trip was to provide Internet training for Russian journalists, and improving our database of nonprofit organizations in Russia's regions (our main focus). While there I visited three cities: Moscow, Ekaterinburg and Nizhnii Novgorod. I have just finished scanning in the photos and adding some descriptions of the sites.

Could you please mail me your comments on this text? Thank you very much.
