A Hold-My-Hand Word Perfect Assignment

Value: 0% Due: never

Purpose: To be a gentler introduction to WP 5.1

  1. Start WordPerfect by restoring the WordPerfect Window and double clicking on the program icon. After entering a three character code, you will get a blank blue screen. Enter some text to experiment with. Enter a long sentence without typing the ``Enter'' or ``Return'' key to see how autowrap works. Use the arrow keys to navigate around your already entered text and make corrections. Turn off numlock and press the insert key. What switch is toggled when this key is pressed?
  2. Press F3 for help. From this help screen, you can list functions alphabetically or by key. To see a template of the basic uses of the function keys press F3 again. Do this now. Notice the legend in the upper right corner. Each function key has four uses. Pressing the function key in combination with the control key (ctrl) gives the top option (shown in white on your screen.) For example, Ctrl+F7 creates a footnote. The second option (shown in reverse font) is chosen by pressing alt plus the function key. Shift and the function key together choose the third option (shown in caps) and the function key alone selects the final option. For example Shift+F7 prints a document and F7 alone is EXIT.
  3. Use F10 to save your work. Use F6 to make a bold section of text. If you want to add new boldface text, type F6 and then type the text. Type F6 again to return to regular type. If you want to convert already-entered text to bold, select the text by dragging over it with the mouse and then press F6. Try using this technique to make an underlined section of text.
  4. Press F11 (Reveal Codes). What happens? Move your cursor and watch what happens. At the ends of most lines there should be the symbols [HRt] or [SRt]. What do these mean? Press F11 again.
  5. Make a footnote. Remember that EXIT is F7, so press F7 when you are asked to `Press exit'. Make a second footnote. Go back and edit the first one. Exit from WordPerfect. You don't have to save your work. You don't need to hand anything in from this section.
