What is speech recognition?

What is required in speech recognition:

To recognize a word,
- the brain must detect that the auditory features that make up the word have occurred (or, nearly all of them); and
- that those features have occurred in the correct temporal relationship;
furthermore, the brain must be able to recognize the word whether it is spoken slowly or fast.

Hopfield and Brody's brain achieves these properties using a network of a thousand biologically-realistic spiking neurons.
