Windows 2000 printer connection
Setting up LPR for Windows

Overview of LPR
LPR printing allows users at home or with a non-CSLab machine (eg laptop) to use Departmenal printers in  labs, printer rooms and offices.

LPR provides facilities for checking the status of print jobs in a print queue and for removing a job from the queue.

Setup steps

Collect printer information
Before starting, collect information about the printer you want to use:
  • manufacturer and model
  • postscript printer driver used for the printer

  • (most likely available on the Windows 2000 CD)
  • official/network names of the printer (print queue) and print server
Find out the official/network names of the printer (print queue) and print server

At CSLab most/all the printers are available through the print server "lpd.cs.toronto.edu".

Users can find out the printer queues available by logging on to a CSLab machine and typing the command:
      printers
Since there is such a large number of printers in the department, the 'more' command is useful:
     printers | more
(The '|' is called pipe and found over the Enter key on most PC's ).

Some (many) printers will have two queues associated with them. One will print double sided (duplex) the other singlex. This is for convenience, there are ways to invoke duplexing even if you've selected
the singlex queue, so you can just select the single sided queue if you want.

You will see the printer make and model in the output from `printers`.

Set up your laptop

Setting up your computer

1. Add LPR port
On the Start menu, select Settings>>Printers>>Add Printer.

When the Add Printer Wizard window opens, select Next.

When the Local or Network Printer window appears, select Local printer, and be sure to de-select "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer"

Yes, we all know the printer not directly attached to your computer but this is the way it has to be done.

Select Next. The window for selecting and creating a printer port and selecting a port type appears.

Select the button, Create a new port, and choose LPR Port from the drop down list, then select Next. A window appears for entering a print server and printer (print queue) name.

If LPR Port is not one of the options
Go to the section below, Add Print Services for UNIX, follow the instructions, then return to these steps.

2. Enter print server and printer names
Enter the print server name in the first field and the printer (print queue) name in the second field. Use lower case, as illustrated below.

Select OK. A window, shown in the next section, appears for specifying your printer's manufacturer and model and the printer driver used for your printer.

3. Select printer driver
Select your printer's manufacturer from the list. If it does not appear, contact your friendly neighbourhood system administrator to find out the appropriate printer driver.

Be sure to select a postscript printer driver.  The driver name usually ends in "PS" or "PostScript", for example, HP Laserjet 5Si/5Si MX PS.

For a last resort you can use the Apple LaserWriter II v 47 driver if you are in a hurry and can't find the right driver. This provides a generic postscript driver but you won't get any special features for the printer (eg tray selection or duplexing).

Select Next. A window appears for selecting your own name for the printer and for selecting the printer as your default printer.

4. Enter your own name for the printer
On the window, Name Your Printer, give your printer a name. We recommend sticking with the official name, but you can choose one that makes sense to you if you want..

Select Yes if you want Windows programs to use this printer as the default printer (i.e. the one output will go to if you don't change it. You probably don't want to do this for a home computer.

Select Next. A window appears for specifying printer sharing.

5. Specify printer sharing
Unless you want other people to have access to your computer to send their print jobs, select Do not share this printer. If you are configuring this on your home computer connected to boadband (eg. Rogers or Sympatico), think long and hard before turning any kind of sharing on.

If you change your mind later, you can easily change this by right clicking on the printer and selecting Sharing.

Select Next. A window appears for printing a test page.

6. Print a test page and complete printer setup
Select Yes if you want a test page now. If you aren't sure, you probably do.  Your test page will not print until you click Finish on the next window.

Select Next. The completion window summarizes your printer setup selections.

Verify your settings and then select Finish.

Your printer setup is now complete.  Check the printer for the test page if you printed one. If you are at home this step might take a while :-).

Getting help
If a test page did not print, check your settings and try again, then ontact your friendly neighbourhood system administrator.

Add print services for UNIX
(This process is required for some installations, if no LPR Port option appears during the stage Add LPR Port .)

Select Start | Settings | Control Panel

In the Control Panels window, select Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Programs window appears.

In the dark gray left section of the Add/Remove Programs window, select Add/Remove Windows Components. The Windows Components list shown below appears.

In the line, "Other Network File and Print Services", leave the checkbox blank and highlight the line, then select the Details button.

When the details window called Other Network File and Print Services appears, select the checkbox beside Print Services for Unix.

Select OK to close the details window.

Depending on how Windows 2000 was installed on your computer, you may be prompted for the Windows 2000 CD at this point.

When the Windows components window reappears, a check appears in the box beside Other Network File and Print Services.

Select Next, then Finish, and close the Add/Remove Programs window.

You do not need to restart.

Start to install LPR at the section above, Add LPR Port
