Q & A Sessions for CSC 466/2305 =============================== Because the UofT cancelled classes for the rest of this term (see https://www.utoronto.ca/message-from-the-university-regarding-the-coronavirus), we will not have any more CSC 466/2305 lectures. Instead, I will list below what sections of the Nocedal and Wright textbook we would have covered in each lecture and we will have an on-line Question and Answer (Q & A) Session to discuss the material for each lecture. Before each (Q & A) Session, you should read the sections of the Nocedal and Wright textbook that we will cover. In the (Q & A) Session, I will start by giving a short discussion of the sections and then I will try to answer your questions. My discussion will likely reference various equations, etc., in the Nocedal and Wright textbook. So, you should have a copy of the textbook on hand during the Q & A Session. I haven't yet decided what platform we will use for the Q & A Sessions; I will get back to you about that soon. If you don't have a copy of the Nocedal and Wright textbook, you can download an e-copy for free from the UofT Library webpage https://link-springer-com.myaccess.library.utoronto.ca/book/10.1007%2F978-0-387-40065-5 If you prefer a hardcopy of the textbook, you can buy one from several sources. See, for example, https://www.amazon.ca/Numerical-Optimization-Jorge-Nocedal/dp/0387303030/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=nocedal&qid=1584139002&sr=8-1 List of Q & A Sessions ====================== Q & A Session 1: Monday, March 16, 1:10-2:00 PM Read the following two section from the Nocedal and Wright textbook - Two-Dimensional Subspace Minimization, pages 76 & 77 - Reduction Obtained by the Cauchy Point, pages 77-79 To connect to this session at 1:00 (or a little later), use the URL https://ca.bbcollab.com/guest/99f35405ddcc485d82e29c99a0248ae1 Q & A Session 2: Wednesday, March 18, 1:10-2:00 PM Read the following sections from the Nocedal and Wright textbook - Theorem 4.5 on page 80 - Theorem 4.6 on page 82 We will discuss these two theorems, but we won't discuss their proofs. (You might want to look at the proofs yourself, but you won't be responsible for them for this course.) Section 4.3, starting at the bottom of page 83. We will probably cover up to the start of "The Hard Case" on page 87. To connect to this session at 1:00 (or a little later), use the URL https://ca.bbcollab.com/guest/30b289dd967546ce9977886784788b19 Q & A Session 3: Friday, March 20, 1:10-2:00 PM We will discuss the proposed change in the marking scheme for CSC 466/2305 and vote on the proposed change. We will also discuss submitting CSC 466/2305 Assignment 4. Read Section 4.3, starting at the bottom of page 83. We will probably cover up to the start of "The Hard Case" on page 87. To connect to this session at 1:00 (or a little later), use the URL https://ca.bbcollab.com/guest/327d0181722b41c5bc01911a35b19ced Q & A Session 4: Monday, March 23, 1:10-2:00 PM The proposed change to the marking scheme for CSC 466/2305 was accepted by the class. We will discuss that briefly. We will also discuss briefly the final CSC 466/2305 assignment. (I hope to post it today (Sunday, March 22). We will also discuss another section of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. Read "The Hard Case" starting on page 87 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. Also, read the "Proof of Theorem 4.1" starting on page 89 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. To connect to this session at 1:00 (or a little later), use the URL https://ca.bbcollab.com/guest/8c53645a5ba045d88edd29788c96a575 There are some notes for the Q & A Session on the webpage http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~krj/courses/466-2305/Notes.1.pdf Q & A Session 5: Wednesday, March 25, 1:10-2:00 PM When we were discussing proof on Theorem 4.1 last Monday, I noted that the statement at the end of the proof on 91 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook was a bit "mysterious" to me. I looked into why equation (4.51) "suffices to prove (4.8c)". You can find my notes on this at http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~krj/courses/466-2305/Notes.Proof.P-91.pdf We won't go over this in Q & A Session 5, but I thought a few of you might like to read it. If you can think of a better proof, let me know. We will discuss very briefly in Q & A Session 5 the end of Chapter 4. Take a quick look at pages 91-97 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. We will spend most of the time Q & A Session 5 discussing the beginning of Chapter 5. Take a closer look at pages 101-107. I made some notes on this material. Take a look at http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~krj/courses/466-2305/Notes.2.pdf To connect to this session at 1:00 (or a little later), use the URL https://ca.bbcollab.com/guest/621e338081fb40af8f10e26e1e2c2334 Q & A Session 6: Friday, March 27, 1:10-2:00 PM We will continue discussing the beginning sections of Chapter 5 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. Last time, we got as far as discussing Figure 5.2 on page 105 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. We will continue from there. Read up to the Section "Rate of Convergence" on page 112 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. I'm not sure if we will get that far on Friday, March 27, but, if not, we will cover that material on Monday, March 30. Also, I will likely refer to my notes http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~krj/courses/466-2305/Notes.2.pdf that I wrote for Q & A Session 5 on Wednesday, March 25. To connect to this session at 1:00 (or a little later), use the URL https://ca.bbcollab.com/guest/7c8597c07f874aa884acb92b9b72a62c Q & A Session 7: Monday, March 30, 1:10-2:00 PM We will discuss the Conjugate Gradient Method, starting on page 107 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. We should get as far as the section on Rate of Convergence on page 112 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. We might do a little of the Rate of Convergence section. So, try to read a few pages of that section as well. You can find some notes for our discussion of these sections at http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~krj/courses/466-2305/Notes.3.pdf To connect to this session at 1:00 (or a little later), use the URL https://ca.bbcollab.com/guest/f66c823080de45c1b9225308670b7989 Q & A Session 8: Wednesday, April 1, 1:10-2:00 PM We will continue discussing the convergence of the Conjugate Gradient Method. On Monday, I believe we got to the bottom of page 113 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. We will continue from there on Wednesday. So, you should complete reading this section. That is, read to the start of the section on Preconditioning on page 118 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. You can find some notes for our discussion of these sections at http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~krj/courses/466-2305/Notes.4.pdf To connect to this session at 1:00 (or a little later), use the URL https://ca.bbcollab.com/guest/919fc8d999aa456d81a75dcf7cf274f7 Q & A Session 9: Friday, April 3, 1:10-2:00 PM We will continue discussing the convergence of the Conjugate Gradient Method. On Wednesday, I believe we got to Theorem 5.4 on page 115 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. We will continue from there on Friday. So, you should complete reading this section. That is, read to the start of the section on Preconditioning on page 118 of the Nocedal and Wright textbook. You can find some notes for our discussion of these sections at http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~krj/courses/466-2305/Notes.4.pdf I'll also very briefly discuss a few topics that we don't have time to cover in depth.
