NOTE: the most recent postings are at the top of this page !

A4 FAQs web page.

Jan 11: Here are your final (unofficial) marks.

Jan 07: We have most of the regrades posted and calculated the (unofficial) raw final marks. So, please check the marks file again. Any problem should be brought to my attention ASAP in person, tomorrow between 12:00PM and 1PM.

Jan 02:

Dec 10: Here is a solution to A4.

Dec 07: I will hold an office hour on this coming Monday bewteen 5:00PM and 6:45PM in LP266 (LP is Pratt Building).

Dec 07: There is a brief review of the topics that matter for the exam here.

Dec 03: IMPORTANT NOTICE: For the final exam, the following aids will be allowed: one 8 and 1/2 x 11 aid sheet (both sides); non-programmable calculators.

Nov 26: Assignment 4. Remember that for this very last assignment, there will technically be no way for submitting late. So start working on the assignment ASAP ! We have a FAQs web page here.

Nov 23: Here are the A2 marks for the entire class. Any problems should be reported to me ASAP.

Nov 20: Extension for A3. The due date for A3 has been extended to the end of Sunday November 25. Also there is bonus of 10% of the actual A3 grade for early submissions by this Thursday midnight. With that bonus, if your actual grade is, say, 70%, then you'll in fact get 77%. See also here.

Nov 07: CSC 270 TA office hours. These have been scheduled around assignments due dates and tests. Please make use of them for questions regarding assignments. I won't answer any question of which I know that it has been dealt with in TA office hours.

Upcoming TA office hours:

Friday 16 Nov, 1:00-2:00, SF 2110
Tuesday 20 Nov, 4:00-5:00, LP 378
Friday 30 Nov, 1:00-2:00, SF 2110
Tuesday 4 Dec, 4:00-5:00, LP 378

Nov 06: Assignment 3 is available at this link. Further technical specifications and pieces of code (about layouts) to use are in ~ajr/a3/layouts.c on CDF. A FAQ list for A3 will be maintained at http://www.dgp.toronto.edu/~ajr/270/a3/qna.html.

Nov 05: Assignment 3 will be made available tomorrow. Notice that for this, you will have no extension and you'd better start doing it on time! I will cover C++ in class tomorrow. The TAs will go over case studies.

Nov 05: For the coming Assignment 3, the gas station program in the 270/b70 official readings is of great interest. You may have to study it in order to understand how a sample simulation is done. The example in the readings is written in Java. A C++ version -- courtesy of Jim Clarke -- can be found at the following link.

Nov 02: Here are the midterm marks so far. Solutions are here.

Nov 01: You get an extension for A2. The due date is now the end of Sunday November 4th. Also there is no special treatment and no bonus for early submissions.

Oct 31: Those who have not yet picked their midterm copies can get them back tomorrow at 4PM in front of SF4301E. I'll be there waiting for 15 minutes.

Oct 30: To harmonize with the Day Section, you are not required to submit your makefile.

Oct 26: Here is a link to the algorithm from Rosen's book.

Oct 25: A web page with FAQs on A2 is to find here.

Oct 25:

Oct 22: Here are the A1 marks for the entire class. Any problems should be reported to me ASAP.

Oct 22: One of you asked how you can "practice" for the midterm. Here are some hints: apply the FPA algorithms on FP numbers; Take all the algorithms seen, and work out some inputs; given one of the known algorithms, how can you express it in C? etc. Have fun in learning, and don't panic: only things seen in class and tutorials will be asked.

Oct 22: For tomorrow's midterm, NON-programmable calculators will be allowed. The exam papers will be enough for you to do all the scrap work needed. Also, there will be no 'cheat sheet' for the exam. Learn all the formulas seen in class -- there aren't many of them ! -- with exception of the stuff on Taylor's series.

Oct 18: There is an oversight in the A2 handout: this says that the directory name where the A2 files are located is ~ajr/270/a2/files, but it is actually ~ajr/a2 on CDF.

Oct 17: Here is a mini guide through midterm topics.

Oct 17: Assignment 2. Again, remember that we have a "no-lateness-policy". So start working on the assignment ASAP ! The assignment must be done using files stored in ~ajr/a2/ on CDF.

Oct 17: I have put 4 copies of Sections 4.2.1 - 4.2.3 from Knuth's book on short term loan in the Computer Science and Enginering Library in the 2nd floor of Sanford Fleming Blg. You may check them out for a maximum of 2 hours. Also stay tuned ... a list of relevant topics for the midterm to follow! After that I will post some lecture and tutorial notes, and Assignment 2 as well.

Oct 16: Today, we'll first finish root-finding methods, after which we'll start graphs. Finally, we'll do a small review of material covered so far.

Oct 16: Final notice on time and locations of the Oct 23 midterm

Bld/RoomLettersTime
MP 134Letters A - K18:00 - 19:00
MP 202Letters L - Z18:00 - 19:00

Oct 15: Additional notice on the time and location of midterm: It turns out that we might get our lecture room (MP202) together with MP134 for the midterm at tutorial time (6-7PM). So I will give a definitive answer on this tomorrow when I get the confirmation about the rooms.

Oct 15: Time and location of midterm. As you already know, the midterm will be held on Tuesday, Oct 23. It will be held between 7:10 and 8:00 PM on that day, that is, in the first hour of lecture time in MP 202.

Oct 11: As promised, I have started to post the outlines and notes of the 4 past tutorials.

Oct 10: I will post the outlines, and -- in some cases -- notes of the 4 past tutorials so that evryone knows what (s)he is supposed to know in order to be prepared for tests and lectures.

Oct 1: The midterm will be held on Tuesday, Oct 23. Time and location will be announced.

Reading assignment on C:

K&R: Chapters 5, 6, 7 (except 7.3), and 8.4
King: Chapters 11, 12, 13, 16, 21, and 22

Sept 26: I will post the reading assignments for the past 3 lectures tomorrow.

Sept 26: I have had a couple of requests for waiving prerequisites, granting permission to my course, etc. Here's what is decided about those issues:

Anyone who has evidence to show me should come to my office.

Sept 26:Please check here to know your logins.

Sept 24:Assignment 1. Remember that we have a "no-lateness-policy". So please start working on the assignment ASAP ! The assignment must be done using these files.

Sept 21: I am back in Toronto and glad to teach my class again. I will hold my regular office hour this coming Tuesday. All those who emailed me about any administrative matter should attend this coming office hour to discuss their concern with me. Also let us gratefully thank the instructor who replaced me during my absence. As you all know, the events in the USA made it hard to come back from Europe on time. My apology for that.

Sept 06: Being on conferences over the next few days, Harrold Connamacher will be teaching you in the week 1.
