{"id":228,"date":"2010-11-24T10:56:17","date_gmt":"2010-11-24T15:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cs.toronto.edu:40006\/wlog\/?p=228"},"modified":"2010-11-24T10:56:17","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T15:56:17","slug":"resetting-password-on-mac-os-x-10-5-without-the-cd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.cs.toronto.edu\/~jhancock\/wlog\/?p=228","title":{"rendered":"Resetting password on Mac OS X 10.5 (without the cd)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently received a macbook which I didn&#8217;t have an account on, so I found the following instructions for resetting the password (from<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.macyourself.com\/2009\/08\/03\/how-to-reset-your-mac-os-x-password-without-an-installer-disc\/ )<\/p>\n<h4>Reset 10.5 Leopard password<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Power on or restart your Mac.<\/li>\n<li>At the chime (or grey screen if your chime is turned off), hold down Command+S on your keyboard to enter single-user mode.<\/li>\n<li>This step is optional, but it\u2019s a good idea because it checks the  consistency of the hard disk before moving on. At the prompt, type <strong>fsck -fy<\/strong> and press Enter\/Return. Wait for the checks to complete before going to the next step.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>mount -uw \/<\/strong> and press Enter.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>launchctl load \/System\/Library\/LaunchDaemons\/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist<\/strong> and press Enter.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>ls \/Users<\/strong> and press Enter. This lists all of the usernames on the computer \u2013 helpful if you don\u2019t know or remember what these are.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>dscl . -passwd \/Users\/username password<\/strong> and  replace \u201cusername\u201d with one of the users displayed in the previous step.  Replace \u201cpassword\u201d with a new password of your choice.
