The purpose of Formal Characterisations
In conceptual modelling, the purpose of taking a more formal approach (compared to,say boxes-and-arrows notation which do not have a clear semantics) is to give a more precise meaning to the concepts, so as to be able to adjudicate among different interpretations of a given model, and to offer a basis for building tools which assist in reasoning with the models.
