Process Reengineering

We use the term reengineering to emphasize that process improvement usually involves a pre-existing process, so that descriptive models are required. (p1)

Process reengineering involves the exploration and selection of new configurations of relationships [between intentional strategic actors] (p3)

Process reengineering involves modelling existing routines (e.g. by asking "why" and "how" questions) and discovering new and better routines (p6)

Beside being more expressive (and thus providing a deeper intuitive understanding for the modeller and the user), the SR model offers assistance in a number of analysis and design activities which can be computer-supported, taking advantage of the formal representation of the SR model.(p41)

These representational constructs [of the SD and SR model] can be used in different ways. Further guidance in the usage of these constructs in the form of methodologies may be necessary. The methodology may recommend or stipulate performing modelling steps in a particular order.(p42)

In modelling [process analysis], the SR graph is constructed and elaborated to reflect conditions in the world as it exists, or to express alternatives that have already been developed. In design, the SR model is used (in conjunction with the SD model) to help systematically explore new ways of doing things and reorganizing. (p47)
