  • Sat 28 Oct A2: More Answers to Asked Questions

    In the usual place.

  • Fri 27 Oct A2: Late penalty

Keep in mind we have the `initially gentle' late penalty (see the Course Information Sheet), that applies per part. so if you have some time this evening to finish up scheme-file-list, one of the three rewrite rules (select-boolean, append-singleton or unwrap-lambda) and trippy (and you can leave your helper procedures that linearly traverse a list until later) you should do so. Every student has their own idea of how much of a penalty they'll accept, but at midnight the penalty is still less than 10% of part of a 10% assignment, which has an almost undetectable impact on your final mark (much less than 1%). If you are behind on your sleep, work on A2 for only a couple of hours so it's no longer mysterious, submit something, email me with any questions, go to sleep and finish it off by early afternoon Saturday (for a late penalty affecting your final mark by about 1%).

  • Wed 25 Oct A1: Solutions posted

  • Wed 25 Oct A2: Extension and solutions posted

For trippy you may hand in your helper procedures that do only linear processing on Monday, and you may improve the style and minor errors found by testing the rest of trippy (which you first hand in on Friday). Marks will be deducted for the amount of change from your original version on Friday to the one on Monday. Good comments will help you: we will view changes that bring your code closer to your comments more favorably.

For the rules, only one of them is due Friday, and you may choose which. You may also improve its style and resubmit on Monday.

To get an idea of the length of the code take a look at this. The only non-A1 procedure/form used there was member (and of course eqv?). We used higher-order functions a number of times, especially map and one we wrote ourselves for A1.

Week 5

  • Sat 14 Oct Some Lecture Summaries posted

    See the "Content" page.

  • Sat 14 Oct A1: Answer 3 to some Asked Questions posted

  • Sat 14 Oct Dr Scheme

A student tells me there's no obvious icon for it on CDF. So you'll have to hunt around, or just type drscheme from a shell (it's at /usr/bin/drscheme).

  • Wed 12 Oct A1 Extension

By popular request, we are extending the due date of part of A1. Procedures tester, fold-in and deep-map are still due Tue 17 Oct at 5pm. The rest are due Fri 20 Oct at 5pm, and you may also resubmit one of tester, fold-in or deep-map at that time.

Week 4

  • Thr 5 Oct A1 Posted

    In the usual place.

  • Wed 4 Oct Assignment 1 (and A0 marks)

Seeing how students were handling the review material of A0, I rearranged some lecture material, and also wanted to see what the marks were like before we dive into the new material of A1. A1 will be posted Thursday, and is due one week later than originally planned. A2 will be posted next week, and due on it's originally planned date.

The marks for A0 are available through CDF. The average is 69%, but the median is 75%: so half of you are bunched up near the top. If we don't count the three students without CSC 236 and 207, more than 3/5 of you are above 74%, and 1/5 are below 44%. For some of you this is a good time to reflect on Joel Spolsky's article (see the "Content" page), and go back over A0 again: master those concepts so you can focus on the simpler task of using new syntax, and also the deeper task of applying those concepts in new situations; also, tutorials are there for you to personalize the pace and material by participating, not for the TA to present a lot of new material.

Week 3

  • Mon 25 Sep A0: Electronic Submission

Electronic submission has been set up, using the usual CDF submission system you used in CSC 108/148/150. You can also submit from a CDF command line using submit. See man submit for details, but a quick example should get you going: submit -c csc324h -a A0 SumSquares.java.
