Announcements

Please check this page regularly (meaning at least once a week, more if possible)!

Date Announcement(s)
01/15
(Thu)

Unofficial final course marks have been posted. These include ALL remarking requests and adjustments. Please read the notes about final marks posted on the Current Marks page for more details.

12/12
(Fri)

All remarking requests that were received before the exam have been taken care of, and the new marks are posted. You can collect your remarked work from the box labelled "CSC236" in SF-4306.

The unofficial final course marks will be posted as soon as they are ready (note that this means if the marks are not posted, it's because they are not ready yet). We hope to have them ready within one week, but it may take slightly longer. We are sorry, but we cannot really be any more precise than this.

12/10
(Wed)

I have posted the marks for Quiz 5, as well as the assignment and quiz total marks (best 4 out of 5 for each one). The quizzes are available for pickup from a box outside my office (the same one that holds Assignment 5).
Unfortunately, I have not had time to finish taking care of the remarking requests. I plan to do this Thursday morning. I will post another announcement once this is done.

My apologies for the last-minute nature of this announcement. Shai Cohen will hold office hours today (Wednesday 10 December) at 3-5, in the usual place (SS-1071C).

12/09
(Tue)

There was a typo in question 2 of the complete solutions for Assignment 2 (in the induction step, a "17k" should be "17k-1" instead). An updated version of the complete solutions has been posted.

The marked copies of Assignment 5 are available for pickup from a box outside my office (in room SF-4306). After the exam, all unclaimed work will be left at the office of the CSSU (room BA-2283).

12/08
(Mon)

I have fixed a typo in the links to CSC207H below. Sorry for the inconvenience.

12/07
(Sun)

I have posted the marks for Assignment 5. The marked assignments will be available for pickup from my outer office (room SF-4306) up until the day of the final exam. At that point, any unclaimed assignments will be transfered to the office of the CSSU.

During one of the last classes, someone asked for applications of F.S.A. and R.E. I mentionned language parsing inside compilers as one application, but there is another more widespread use of regular expressions: inside many Unix editors (such as vim and emacs), extended regular expressions are used to perform complex searches or search-and-replace functions. (Check the documentation for your favourite editor for more details.) Also, someone pointed out by e-mail that CSC207H used regular expressions and finite-state automata this term. Check out the following links for more details:

12/05
(Fri)

Next week, I will hold office hours Tuesday 10-1 and Thursday 12-3. (These are extended hours from my usual times. Unfortunately, I will not be able to hold office hours on any other day next week.)

Typo fix in extra lecture notes for Week 12
There was a typo in the example of the subset construction given in the typeset notes for week 12: the state numbers "2" and "3" were incorrectly interchanged. I have posted a corrected version of the notes.

I have posted complete solutions for all of the assignments (including the questions that were not marked). I have also posted the solutions and marking scheme for Quiz 5.

I will post an announcement as soon as I have finished taking care of the latest remarking requests, to let you know that the marks have been updated and where/when you can pick up your work.

12/02
(Tue)

I have posted detailed notes about the final exam on the Midterm Test and Final Exam page. I have also posted the lecture summary for this week on the Lecture Summaries page, and the marking scheme for Assignment 5 on the Assignments page.

11/29
(Sat)

The Assignments page has been updated with the solutions and marking schemes for Assignment and Quiz 4, as well as the solutions for Assignment 5. The marks for Assignment and Quiz 4 will be posted as soon as I receive them from the marker (sometime next week).

Except for Assignment 2, all other remarking requests have been taken care of. The new marks have been posted and I will bring the remarked work with me to lectures next week. (Any unclaimed work after Wednesday will be returned to the CSSU office.) For Assignment 2 remarking requests, I have asked the original marker to look at them. I expect that I will be able to finish taking care of them sometime next week, and either return them in lecture on Wednesday or have the TA's return them in tutorial on Friday.

11/26
(Wed)

Course evaluations will be carried out on Wednesday of next week (Dec 3). I will also do review and tell you more about the exam on that day. Please show up for the course evaluations: it's important to get everyone's feedback!

The Counselling and Learning Skills Services are holding an "exam anxiety workshop" on Monday 1 December, 9-12. To register for this workshop (or find out more about it), please call 416-978-7970 or visit their office in room 111 of the Koffler Centre (214 College Street).

11/24
(Mon)

Change to Assignment 5
Because I was unable to cover the necessary material, Question 6 on Assignment 5 will officially not be marked.

11/19
(Wed)

I have posted the lecture summary for this week, and to give everyone a chance to read ahead, I have also posted parts of my lecture notes for next week. I also plan to put together one more example of a FSA sometime before next week, and post it on this page.

Change of office hours for this week
For THIS week, I will hold my Thursday office hours 1pm-2:30pm (instead of the usual 12:30-2pm).

11/17
(Mon)

Because of a small misunderstanding the posted marks for Assignment 3 did not include any submission bonus or penalty. This has now been corrected.

11/15
(Sat)

I originally posted the wrong file for my summary of lecture notes for Week 9 (the proof that T(n) is O(log_2 n) was slightlyl incorrect). I have now posted an updated, correct version. My apologies for any confusion.

11/14
(Fri)

The solutions for Assignment 4 have been posted on the Assignments page.

11/12
(Wed)

Assignment 5 and the marking scheme and comments for Assignment 3 have been posted on the Assignments page. The marks for Assignment 3 have also been posted.

11/10
(Mon)

Last-minute correction for Assignment 4
Question 5(b) should read: "Prove that for any a,b in R+, if b>1, then n^a in O(b^n)."
However, given the lateness of this correction, we will also accept a disproof of the original statement (without the "if b>1" part).

11/06
(Thu)

The marker of Assignment 2 and Quiz 2 will hold office hours to answer your questions on Friday 7 November, 12pm-1pm, in room SF-4303F.

Hint for Assignment 4.
On Question 5, you are allowed to use known results from calculus. However, you must clearly state the results that you are using and refer to the appropriate definitions to justify your conclusions.

11/02
(Sun)

The solutions to Assignment 3 have been posted on the Assignments page.

Typo on Assignment 4 handout.
For question 6, the two lines in the body of the while-loop need to be swapped (so that x := x+1 is executed first). An updated handout has been posted.

10/31
(Fri)

The marks for the midterm test have been posted.
The solutions and marking scheme for the midterm test will be posted on the Midterm Test page sometime this weekend. Please take the time to read them CAREFULLY if you have any questions about the way your test was marked!

If you have any concerns about your standing in the course, please send me an e-mail to discuss them.

10/28
(Tue)

Assignment 4 has been posted on the Assignments page.

10/27
(Mon)

The marks for Assignment 2 have been posted. The marks for Quiz 2 will be posted as soon as they are available.

Change of office hours (permanent)
Until the end of the term, my Thursday office hours have been changed to be from 12:30pm until 2pm.

10/22
(Wed)

The solutions, marking scheme, and marking comments for Assignment 2 and Quiz 2 have now been posted. I have also posted my lecture notes for this week, and the marks for A2 and Q2 will be posted soon.

Change to Assignment 3
Because I was unable to cover the necessary material, Question 6 on Assignment 3 will officially not be marked.

The midterm test will take place in your regular tutorial room, at the regular tutorial time, and will be on all of the logic material (propositional and predicate) as well as the proof material (basic techniques and the various forms of induction).

10/21
(Tue)

Typo fix in Assignment 3
There was a typo in the original handout, on question 3(a). The formula used to start with "(\-/ x A(z) ..." but that "z" should instead be an "x" so that the formula starts with "(\-/ x A(x) ..." A new handout has been posted with this change.

10/20
(Mon)

Extended Office Hours for this week!
For THIS week, I will extend both of my office hours to provide extra help before the midterm test. My new office hours will take place on Tuesday 10am-1pm and Thursday 1pm-4pm.

10/14
(Tue)

Change of office hours for this week
For THIS week, I will hold my Thursday office hours 12:30pm-2pm (instead of the usual 1:30-3). My Tuesday office hours will not be changed (10:30-12).

Assignment 3 has been posted on the Assignments page.

Solutions and marking scheme for Quiz 1
...have been posted on the Assignments and Quizzes page.

The marker of Assignment 1 and Quiz 1 will hold special office hours on Thursday 16 October, 4:30pm-5:30pm, in GB-405. This is a chance for you to ask questions about the marking of your work, and to submit remarking requests.
If you cannot attend this office hour, you can still submit your questions or requests by following the Remarking Policy.
Note that you must submit any remarking request within one month of the date when the work was returned.

General information about midterm test
The midterm test will be held next week during regular tutorial times. It will be a closed-book test lasting 50 minutes, and will be on all of the material covered before the test (including possibly some easy questions on the material covered next week).

10/07
(Tue)

Also, the marking scheme for the assignment is available on the Assignments page.

TCard troubles
We are aware that some students are unable to enter the drop box room (BA-2220). The problem is not confined to the CDF labs and is being investigated by the company that operates the lock system in the Bahen building. We expect that it will be fixed soon (probably by the end of the week). Keep trying and let us know if there are still problems next week.

09/23
(Tue)

Assignment 2 has been posted on the Assignments page.

09/22
(Mon)

TA office hour for today
One of the TA's should be available to answer your questions from 4:30pm to 5:30pm in room GB-405 today. The room booking has not been officially confirmed yet so if there are any last minute changes required, they will be announced here.

09/19
(Fri)

Drop boxes for assignment submission!
To submit your assignments, please leave them in the appropriate drop box (the one labelled "CSC236") in room BA-2220 (it is one of the CDF labs that everyone should have access to using your student card). Someone will collect the assignments from the drop box shortly after each deadline for submission bonuses or penalties, so make sure that you hand it in on time!

09/18
(Thu)

A1 hints
For questions 2-4, we don't want to see an entire truth table in one of your answers, but it's OK to talk about assigning values to variables.
For question 7, you must use only the logical gates that we have talked about (NOT, OR, AND) -- you cannot use any other type of gate.

09/17
(Wed)

The summary of lecture notes for this week has been posted. To avoid cluttering the announcements page in the future, I will not announce when I post lecture notes: it will always happen on Wednesday or Thursday of every week.

09/16
(Tue)

Material for this week's tutorial!
For this week, the TA's will go over solutions to exercises 2, 3(b), 6, and 7 from the course notes (all on page 142). Note that the TA's will not simply provide you with the answers: rather, they will take suggestions from you and lead discussions about the answers you have come up with, so come prepared!

Note about office hours:
Please note that during my office hours, I always give priority to students who are present in my office and asking questions (because it would be rude to interrupt someone to answer the phone, when I am in the middle of answering their question). You are certainly welcome to call during my office hours, but keep in mind that I may not be able to answer.

09/15
(Mon)

I have posted a summary of the material covered during last week's tutorial on the Lecture and Tutorial Summaries page.

09/11
(Thu)

I have added a new page to the course website, where I will post summaries of my lecture notes at the end of each week. The summary for this week's lectures has been posted there.

In lecture yesterday, I believe I made an error when announcing my new office hours: they are T 10:30-12 and R 1:30-3 (I think I wrote T 10:30-11 by mistake). My apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

I have fixed two small grammatical errors in the handout for Assignment 1, and added the correct page reference that was missing. If you printed the handout before this morning, you may want to have another look at it to write down the page number, at least.

09/10
(Wed)

Homework Assignment 1 has been posted on the Assignments page.

09/09
(Tue)

Typo in date of quiz 1!
There was a typo on the ``Important Dates'' section of the Main Webpage, which I have now fixed: the date for Quiz 1 is Thursday 2 October (for section L5101) or Friday 3 October (for section L0101), and not Thursday 30 September/Friday 1 October.

Office Hour time change.
Because of scheduling conflicts, I have had to slightly change the office hours that I announced in lecture yesterday. I plan to hold office hours every week T 10:30-12 and R 1:30-3, unless there is strong objection to these times from a large fraction of the class. I will announce this again in lecture tomorrow, and take another quick class poll to make sure it is reasonable for most people. For this week, I will be available most of the day on Tuesday and Thursday.
