Announcements

Please check this page regularly (meaning at least once a week, more if possible)!

I have posted the marks for Assignment 5, as well as the assignment and quiz total marks (best 4 out of 5 assignments, best 3 out of 4 quizzes because of the missing Quiz 4). The assignments are available for pickup from the box outside my office (the same one that holds Quiz 5).

Date Announcement(s)
01/15
(Thu)

Unofficial final course marks have been posted. These include ALL remarking requests and adjustments. Please read the notes about final marks posted on the Current Marks page for more details.

12/16
(Tue)

The unofficial final course marks will be posted as soon as they are ready (note that this means if the marks are not posted, it's because they are not ready yet). We hope to have them ready within one week, but it may take slightly longer, and they may not be ready until early in January. We are sorry, but we cannot really be any more precise than this.

12/12
(Fri)

I will hold extra office hours on Monday 15 December, 9am - 11:30am, at my office (SF-4306E). I'm sorry but I will not be able to stay on Monday afternoon because of previous engagements. However, I will be checking my e-mail occasionally this weekend.

I am taking care of the remarking requests for Assignments 3 and 4 this afternoon. I will post the updated marks before 4pm today, and leave the remarked work in the box outside my office (in SF-4306).

12/09
(Tue)

I have posted the marks for Quiz 5. The marks for Assignment 5 will be posted as soon as they are available. The quizzes are available for pickup from a box outside my office (in room SF-4306). After the exam, all unclaimed work will be left at the office of the CSSU (room BA-2283).

12/05
(Fri)

Next week, I will hold office hours Tuesday 10-1 and Thursday 12-3. (These are extended hours from my usual times. Unfortunately, I will not be able to hold office hours on any other day next week.)

I have posted complete solutions for all of the assignments (including the questions that were not marked). I have also posted the solutions and marking scheme for Quiz 5.

I will post an announcement as soon as I have finished taking care of the latest remarking requests, to let you know that the marks have been updated and where/when you can pick up your work.

12/02
(Tue)

I have posted detailed notes about the final exam, as well as a copy of the final exam from last term, on the Midterm Test and Final Exam page. I have also posted the lecture summary for this week on the Lecture Summaries page, and the marking scheme for Assignment 5 on the Assignments page.

Quiz 4 situation
As I announced last week, one of the tutorial sections was unable to write Quiz 4 because their TA became suddenly sick and did not have a chance to give us any advance warning. There are three possible solutions that seem fair:

  1. Count the quiz but have every student in the affected tutorial section write a makeup quiz.
  2. Ignore the original quiz and have everyone write a makeup quiz.
  3. Ignore the original quiz and have nobody write a makeup quiz (count the best 3 out of 4 quizzes for everyone).

I have decided that the easiest solution is number 3: ignore Quiz 4 for everyone and count only the best 3 out of 4 quizzes in the final mark. If anyone has strong, reasonable objections to this solution, please let me know. Note that there is very little time left to implement any of the other solutions, so even if you have valid objections it may not be possible for me to address them fully unless I am made aware of them early next week.

The Assignments page has been updated with the solutions and marking schemes for Assignment and Quiz 4, as well as the solutions for Assignment 5. The marks for Assignment and Quiz 4 will be posted as soon as I receive them from the marker (sometime next week).

Except for Assignment 4, all other remarking requests have been taken care of. The new marks have been posted and I will bring the remarked work with me to lectures next week. (Any unclaimed work after Wednesday will be returned to the CSSU office.) For Assignment 4 remarking requests, I will wait until the end of next week and announce when they have been taken care of and where you can collect your remarked assignment.

11/26
(Wed)

Course evaluations will be carried out on Wednesday of next week (Dec 3). I will also do review and tell you more about the exam on that day. Please show up for the course evaluations: it's important to get everyone's feedback!

The Counselling and Learning Skills Services are holding an "exam anxiety workshop" on Monday 1 December, 9-12. To register for this workshop (or find out more about it), please call 416-978-7970 or visit their office in room 111 of the Koffler Centre (214 College Street).

Change to Assignment 5
Because I was unable to cover the necessary material, Question 6 on Assignment 5 will officially not be marked.

11/21
(Fri)

Important announcement about Quiz 4
One of the TA's was unable to attend tutorial this morning, and did not have a chance to give us advance warning. As a consequence, an entire group of students was unable to write Quiz 4.
If you are in this group, do not worry: you will not get zero on Quiz 4.
I have not yet decided exactly how I will deal with this situation, but once I do I will post another announcement to let everyone know.

11/19
(Wed)

I have posted the lecture summary for this week, and because time is getting short for Assignment 5, I have also posted parts of my lecture notes for next week so that you may read ahead. I will put together one more example of a running time analysis and post it before next week.

Change of office hours for this week
For THIS week, I will hold my Thursday office hours 1pm-2:30pm (instead of the usual 12:30-2pm).

Assignment 2 has finally been posted on the Assignments page.

Attend office hours!
One of the problems with this course is that if you are having trouble understanding a question on the assignment, chances are you will have trouble understanding our explanation as well. For this reason, you are encouraged to attend office hours (for both instructor and TA) to ask your questions; it is much easier to explain some of the concepts covered in this course face-to-face. (Of course, I will still be happy to answer e-mail questions.)

TCard troubles
We are aware that some students are unable to enter the drop box room (BA-2220). The problem is not confined to the CDF labs and is being investigated by the company that operates the lock system in the Bahen building. We expect that it will be fixed soon (probably by the end of the week). Keep trying and let us know if there are still problems next week.

CSSU First Year Survival Seminar
Thursday 25 September, 4pm-6pm, BA-1170
The CSSU is holding a seminar for all first year students thinking of doing a degree (or part of one) in Computer Science. Topics will include: program requirements, PEY, grad school, etc.

09/22
(Mon)

TA office hour for today
One of the TA's should be available to answer your questions from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in room GB-405 today. The room booking has not been officially confirmed yet so if there are any last minute changes required, they will be announced here.

09/19
(Fri)

Drop Boxes for assignment submission!
To submit your assignments, please leave them in the appropriate drop box (the one labelled "CSC165") in room BA-2220 (it is one of the CDF labs that everyone should have access to using your student card). Someone will collect the assignments from the drop box shortly after each deadline for submission bonuses or penalties, so make sure that you hand it in on time!

09/17
(Wed)

The summary of lecture notes for this week has been posted. To avoid cluttering the announcements page in the future, I will not announce when I post lecture notes: it will always happen on Wednesday or Thursday of every week.

09/16
(Tue)

First Year Initiative (FYI) Program.
The FYI Program is a series of workshops for first-year students at UofT focusing on learning skills and career development. There will be workshops covering topics such as note-taking, time management, memory and concentration, making the transition from high school, affordable housing, etc. There will also be social events like tour of First Nations House, tour of the St. George campus, Discover the Career Centre, etc. You can find out more on the FYI webpage.

Material for this week's tutorial!
For this week, your TA will go over the solutions to questions 4, 1, and 2(a) on last year's Assignment 1 (in Adobe PDF). Note that the TA's will not simply provide you with the answers: rather, they will take suggestions from you and lead discussions about the answers you have come up with, so come prepared!

Note about office hours:
Please note that during my office hours, I always give priority to students who are present in my office and asking questions (because it would be rude to interrupt someone to answer the phone, when I am in the middle of answering their question). You are certainly welcome to call during my office hours, but keep in mind that I may not be able to answer.

09/15
(Mon)

I have posted a summary of the material covered during last week's tutorial on the Lecture and Tutorial Summaries page.

The material that I covered last week and am covering this week can be found in Sections 1.1 and 1.2 of the "Learning to Reason" book. I am presenting the material quite differently from the book, so there is lots of material in the book that I have not talked about (and some material that I have talked about that's not in the book) but this is as close as possible.

09/12
(Fri)

Assignment 1 has finally been posted on the Assignments page. My apologies for the delay.

09/11
(Thu)

I have added a new page to the course website, where I will post summaries of my lecture notes at the end of each week. The summary for this week's lectures has been posted there.

In lecture yesterday, I believe I made an error when announcing my new office hours: they are T 10:30-12 and R 1:30-3 (I think I wrote T 10:30-11 by mistake). My apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

Information about tutorials
I have announced that there will be a tutorial this week on F12 (the rooms are posted on the Contact Information page). This may have confused some people, because your ROSI registration shows that there is a lecture on F12 in room BA1160.
I apologize for not making this clear during lecture: it is a standard practice in the Department of Computer Science to have students register for three hours of lecture on ROSI but to use one of those hours for tutorials (by breaking up the class into smaller groups in separate rooms). This means that there will be no lecture on F12 during this term: every F12, you should go to your assigned tutorial instead.

CSSU 1st year BBQ
Just a reminder that the CSSU (the Computer Science Students Union) is hosting a BBQ for first-year students from 11am to 1pm on Friday (September 12). [Details: where, what, how much...]
Unfortunately, the time of the BBQ conflicts with the tutorial time (F12) but for this week, it is fine to grab some food and bring it to the tutorial. Also, I am sorry to say that I will be unable to attend.

09/09
(Tue)

Typo in date of quiz 1!
There was a typo on the course information sheet and on the ``Important Dates'' section of the Main Webpage, which I have now fixed: the date for Quiz 1 is Friday 3 October (and not Friday 1 October).

Office Hour time change.
Because of scheduling conflicts, I have had to slightly change the office hours that I announced in lecture yesterday. I plan to hold office hours every week T 10:30-12 and R 1:30-3, unless there is strong objection to these times from a large fraction of the class. I will announce this again in lecture tomorrow, and take another quick class poll to make sure it is reasonable for most people.
For this week, I will be available most of the day on Tuesday and Thursday.

09/05
(Fri)

Under construction! The contents of this website are subject to change until the start of classes (September 8). Any such changes will be summarized on this page.
