WOMEN'S VOYAGEURS CUPS HOLDERS RETAIN TITLES, MEN'S VOYAGEURS CUP RESUMES PLAY

TORONTO (July 22, 2005) - The Ottawa Fury and Vancouver Whitecaps have retained the Women's Voyageurs Cup East and West titles, respectively, that they won last year. Meanwhile, the men's competition resumes play this weekend.

The 2005 Women's Voyageurs Cup East was based on USL W-League regular season matches played between the Ottawa Fury, Sudbury Canadians and Toronto Lynx.

Ottawa finished with a perfect four wins from four matches to finish ahead of Toronto's two wins and two losses and Sudbury's four losses.

Ottawa were dominant in their first three matches, outscoring their opponents 20-0, led by the competition's leading scorer for the second year in a row, Kelly Parker, who had six goals in total.

Nevertheless, the Fury were not able to clinch the title until the final match of the competition at Toronto on July 17, because the two Lynx wins over Sudbury put them only three points behind the Fury heading into that match. It was a much closer affair than their previous matches, but Ottawa ultimately prevailed 3-1 to win their second Women's Voyageurs Cup East title.

The 2005 Women's Voyageurs Cup West was based on all W-League regular season matches played by the London Gryphons and Vancouver Whitecaps.

Each team has one match remaining, but Vancouver have an insurmountable 13-point lead with 12 wins and 1 loss to London's 7 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses.

London kept pace with Vancouver for the first half of the season as they lost only one of their first eight matches. However, after a poor beginning of July, the Gryphons finally fell too far behind and the Whitecaps clinched their second Women's Voyageurs Cup West title on July 9.

The 2005 men's Voyageurs Cup is based on USL First Division matches played between the Montreal Impact, Toronto Lynx and Vancouver Whitecaps.

The competition kicked off with Vancouver hosting Toronto in a scoreless draw on April 24.

Following a three-month hiatus, the competition resumes on July 22 with the three-time champions Montreal Impact visiting Toronto. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM Eastern at Centennial Park Stadium, with the match to be broadcast in Toronto at 10:30 PM by Rogers Television.

The two teams will meet again for the third match on July 24, this time in Montreal. Kickoff is at 4:00 PM Eastern at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex, with the match to be broadcast live in Montreal by CKAC 730 AM and CJAD 800 AM and on the Internet at cjad.com.

Following a five-week break, the next Voyageurs Cup matches take place when Vancouver make a trip east to face Montreal and Toronto just before Labour Day weekend.

The men's and Women's Voyageurs Cups are funded and organized by the Voyageurs. Match schedules, results, standings and more are provided at voyageurscup.ca.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MONTREAL IMPACT WIN THIRD CONSECUTIVE VOYAGEURS CUP

TORONTO, August 28, 2004 - The Montreal Impact continued their Voyageurs Cup dominance by claiming their third consecutive title with a 2-0 victory over Edmonton FC on Wednesday, August 25.

Edmonton headed into the match four points behind Montreal, but, with a game in hand, a victory would have given them an opportunity to win the title. But the Impact proved too tough, earning their sixth shutout in the competition.

The Voyageurs will award the Voyageurs Cup trophy to Montreal before their final A-League regular season game against the Richmond Kickers on Sunday, August 29. Kickoff is at 4 PM at the Claude Robillard Sports Complex.

The final match of the 2004 Voyageurs Cup was a battle for second place as the Toronto Lynx hosted Edmonton on Thursday, August 26. Edmonton needed a draw to secure the runner-up position, but a 3-1 victory for Toronto put the Lynx ahead of Edmonton in the final standings, and just behind Montreal for the third consecutive year.

Montreal finished with 18 points in the Voyageurs Cup standings, having gone undefeated with 5 wins and 3 draws. Toronto ended with 13 points (4 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses), Edmonton were third with 11 points (3-2-3), the Vancouver Whitecaps were fourth with 8 points (2-2-4), and the Calgary Mustangs finished fifth with 5 points (1-2-5).

For the third year in a row a Toronto Lynx player finished as a top scorer in the Voyageurs Cup. This year it was Charles Gbeke, who scored 5 goals for the Lynx. Frederick Commodore (Montreal), Sean Fraser (Edmonton), Ali Gerba (Toronto, last year's top scorer), Conrad Smith (Calgary) and Davide Xausa (Vancouver) all tied for second in the scoring race with 3 goals each.

The expanded Voyageurs Cup schedule in 2004, which accommodated the new Edmonton franchise, led to another close competition. The 2005 Voyageurs Cup is expected to maintain the five-team schedule, including a revitalized Edmonton franchise.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DOWN TO THE WIRE IN THE VOYAGEURS CUP

TORONTO, August 25, 2004 - The only two teams still in contention for the 2004 Voyageurs Cup square off in the biggest match of the competition when the Montreal Impact host Edmonton FC on Wednesday evening.

Montreal need only a draw against Edmonton to claim their third consecutive Voyageurs Cup title, while Edmonton need a win over Montreal and then a draw against the Toronto Lynx in the final match of the competition on Thursday to win the trophy in their inaugural year.

Montreal had an opportunity to pull further ahead at the top of the Voyageurs Cup standings and put more pressure on Edmonton when they hosted the Vancouver Whitecaps on August 6, but could earn only one point in a scoreless draw. Nevertheless, Montreal could still have clinched the title a few days later had the Calgary Mustangs defeated hosts Edmonton in the final Alberta derby of the season on August 10, but Edmonton pulled out a dramatic 3-2 extra time victory after the visitors had led by two early goals.

So with only two matches remaining in the competition, Montreal continue to lead the Voyageurs Cup standings with 15 points while Edmonton remain within reach at 11 points. Toronto are in third place with 10 points and can still finish second with a win over Edmonton on Thursday should Edmonton fail to win in Montreal on Wednesday.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TWO TEAMS LEFT IN THE VOYAGEURS CUP

TORONTO, August 6, 2004 - Only the Montreal Impact and Edmonton FC remain in contention for the 2004 Voyageurs Cup, as the last week of July saw the Toronto Lynx and Vancouver Whitecaps join the Calgary Mustangs in falling too far behind in the standings to reach the leading Impact.

Toronto's hopes were still alive after they defeated the Mustangs 3-2 in a back-and-forth affair in Calgary on July 21. However, Toronto visited Edmonton the following day and fell 2-1 to the hosts on a very late extra-time goal. That result knocked the Lynx out of the running for the title, but moved Edmonton to within striking distance.

Vancouver hosted Calgary in a must-win match on July 30, but they fell short as well. With the Whitecaps leading 1-0 in the dying moments, the Mustangs dramatically evened the score on the last play of the second half. Vancouver were unable to break the tie in extra time, and the Voyageurs Cup race was reduced to two teams.

Montreal lead Edmonton by 6 points in the standings, but they have only two matches remaining while Edmonton have three. Both teams have their fate in their own hands, as either can clinch the Voyageurs Cup by winning all of their remaining matches, though various other scenarios are also possible.

Vancouver make their eastern trip this weekend. On Friday they visit Montreal, an important Voyageurs Cup match but also significant as a confrontation between two of the A-League's best teams. This match will be broadcast live on Fox Sports World Canada and on tape-delay on RDS. Vancouver then move on to Toronto to face the Lynx on Saturday. The final Alberta derby of the season will be played on Tuesday as Edmonton host Calgary in another crucial Voyageurs Cup match.

Montreal will clinch the title if their result against Vancouver is better than Edmonton's result against Calgary. Otherwise the race will come down to the last two matches, including a critical meeting between Montreal and Edmonton, on August 25 and 26.

OTTAWA FURY WIN INAUGURAL WOMEN'S VOYAGEURS CUP EAST

TORONTO, July 23, 2004 - In a very close and dramatic ending, the Ottawa Fury hung on to claim the inaugural Women's Voyageurs Cup East title, despite a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Xtreme in the final match of the competition on July 21.

Montreal led the match 2-0 with only minutes to go, a result that, if it stood, would have secured the Cup for the Xtreme. But Ottawa managed two late goals, enough to clinch the title before sending the match to extra time. Montreal did manage to score the winner in extra time, earning them a great victory over the previously undefeated Ottawa. But it was not enough to claim the Women's Voyageurs Cup East.

Ottawa and Montreal finished the competition with 15 points each, but Ottawa are awarded the championship based on away goals scored. The Toronto Inferno claim third place with 6 points, and the Sudbury Canadians take fourth place, having failed to earn any points.

With both women's competitions now wrapped up, focus turns to the men's Voyageurs Cup, which has 8 matches remaining. However, a 2-0 win over the Calgary Mustangs on July 21 put the Montreal Impact on the verge of clinching their third straight Voyageurs Cup title. The result also eliminated Calgary from the possibility of catching Montreal in the standings.

Montreal are undefeated with 4 wins and 2 draws, topping the standings with 14 points. The Vancouver Whitecaps are second with 6 points (2 wins, 0 draws, 3 losses), and Edmonton FC (formerly Edmonton Aviators) are next with 5 points (1-2-1). The Toronto Lynx (1-1-2) and Calgary (1-1-3) round out the table with 4 points each.

The Voyageurs Cup continues this weekend as Toronto make their annual trip to Alberta. On Sunday, July 25 they visit Calgary, then head north to take on Edmonton on Monday, July 26. The week closes with Calgary visiting Vancouver on Friday, July 30, a match that will be broadcast live across Canada on Fox Sports World Canada.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DOWN TO THE WIRE IN THE WOMEN'S VOYAGEURS CUP EAST

TORONTO, July 21, 2004 - The winner of the inaugural Women's Voyageurs Cup East will be decided in the final match of the competition, when the Montreal Xtreme host the Ottawa Fury on Wednesday, July 21.

Ottawa inched closer to the title with a decisive 5-0 win over the Toronto Inferno on July 18, putting them three points ahead of Montreal, who had earlier defeated Toronto 1-0 on July 3. However, a Montreal win over Ottawa on Wednesday by a score of 1-0 or by a margin of 2 or more goals would hand the title to the Xtreme; any other result and Ottawa would be champions.

Meanwhile, the men's Voyageurs Cup tournament has just passed its midpoint. The Montreal Impact remain at the top of the table with 11 points, but all the teams have secured at least 4 points in the competition. With nine matches left in the competition, there is plenty of time for a contender to challenge Montreal for the Cup.

The men's schedule has been quiet in recent weeks, with only three matches played so far in July. On July 4, the Edmonton Aviators pulled out a late, come-from-behind 3-2 win at the Vancouver Whitecaps; nine days later, Vancouver redeemed themselves with a 2-0 win at Edmonton. On July 18, the Calgary Mustangs visited the Toronto Lynx on their eastern road trip, but Toronto took the three points with a 2-1 win in extra time. The next Voyageurs Cup match is on Wednesday, July 21, when Calgary continue their eastern journey, facing the Impact in Montreal.

The Women's Voyageurs Cup West was decided on June 16, when the Vancouver Whitecaps secured their perfect record with four wins over the Calgary Wildfire and Edmonton Aviators. However, Edmonton ended the competition on a high note, with 1-0 and 2-0 victories over their Alberta rivals in the final matches of the Women's Voyageurs Cup West season.

Despite losing their last match against Ottawa, the Toronto Inferno finished their Women's Voyageurs Cup East schedule on a high note as well, after 3-0 and 4-2 wins over the Sudbury Canadians secured them six points and third place in the final standings.

FRIDAY DOUBLE-HEADER IN THE VOYAGEURS CUP

TORONTO, June 25, 2004 -- Rolling through the competition with four straight wins, the Vancouver Whitecaps have won the first Women's Voyageurs Cup West. Their 3-1 away victories over the Edmonton Aviators and Calgary Wildfire this week assured them the title.

In the east, the women's competition is only one-third complete, with the Montreal Xtreme jumping out to an early lead. The next week is the Ottawa Fury's opportunity to make up ground with away matches against the Sudbury Canadians and Toronto Inferno on the weekend, followed by a crucial match at home to Montreal in midweek.

The men's Voyageurs Cup also sees Montreal in the lead, although the Impact dropped their first points of the competition this week in a 1-1 draw hosted by the Edmonton Aviators. The draw followed victories of 3-0 at the Vancouver Whitecaps and 2-0 at the Calgary Mustangs, creating a 9-point gap between Montreal and their Cup rivals. However, with only four of twenty matches played in the competition, the title is still up for grabs. This weekend sees Calgary host Vancouver and the Toronto Lynx visit Montreal.

VANCOUVER WIN INAUGURAL WOMEN'S VOYAGEURS CUP WEST

TORONTO, June 18, 2004 -- Rolling through the competition with four straight wins, the Vancouver Whitecaps have won the first Women's Voyageurs Cup West.

VOYAGEURS CUP PICKS UP PACE

FIRST WOMEN'S WINNER POSSIBLE NEXT WEEK

TORONTO, June 11, 2004 -- After only one Voyageurs Cup match in the first two months of the A-League season, this weekend marks the beginning of a two-week stretch of seven matches in the competition.

The 2004 Voyageurs Cup kicked off with the two-time defending champions Montreal Impact taking all three points as they defeated the Toronto Lynx 2-0 on May 29 in Toronto.

Now Montreal begin their season's sole western trip with a match tonight against the Vancouver Whitecaps, before moving on to Alberta to face the Calgary Mustangs on Sunday and the Edmonton Aviators on Tuesday. Those will be the first-ever Voyageurs Cup matches for the Mustangs and the city of Edmonton, as both are new to the A-League this year.

On the women's side, the Vancouver Whitecaps have an opportunity to clinch the inaugural Women's Voyageurs Cup West when they visit their western rivals in midweek. After sweeping their home schedule against the Calgary Wildfire (5-0 on May 14) and Edmonton Aviators (2-0 on May 23), the Whitecaps need only four points from their two matches in Alberta to finish on top of the standings.

The first of these matches will be played in Edmonton prior to the Aviators' men's match against Montreal on Tuesday, offering a double-header for Aviators fans. Vancouver then head south to play Calgary the following evening.

In the east, the Montreal Xtreme have taken an early lead in the Women's Voyageurs Cup East standings after three straight wins, at home to the Toronto Inferno (4-1 on May 23) and Sudbury Canadians (4-0 on May 29) and at Sudbury (7-0 on June 5). The Voyageurs Cup trophy is awarded annually to the most successful Canadian A-League team based on league points earned in matches between these teams. The Canadian A-League teams are the Calgary Mustangs, Edmonton Aviators, Montreal Impact, Toronto Lynx and Vancouver Whitecaps.

After two successful years, and with the Cup gaining in popularity and stature, this year's competition promises to be the biggest and most interesting yet, with a new team in Calgary and with Edmonton added to the growing list of Canadian cities represented in the A-League.

Moreover, 2004 will see the inauguration of the Women's Voyageurs Cups. A Women's Voyageurs Cup will be awarded to the most successful Canadian team in each of the Eastern and Western conferences of the W-League based on league points earned in matches between these teams.

The Women's Voyageurs Cup West involves the Calgary Wildfire, Edmonton Aviators and Vancouver Whitecaps, and kicks off on Friday, May 14 with the Whitecaps hosting the Wildfire at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.

The Women's Voyageurs Cup East includes the Montreal Xtreme, Ottawa Fury, Sudbury Canadians and Toronto Inferno, and begins on Sunday, May 23 with the Xtreme at home to the Inferno at the Catalogna Soccerplexe in Lachine.

In both 2002 and 2003, the (Men's) Voyageurs Cup was won by the Montreal Impact in tight, late-season competitions. Montreal will again begin their title defence in the first match of the 2004 competition against the Toronto Lynx at Centennial Stadium in Toronto on Saturday, May 29.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MONTREAL IMPACT REPEAT AS VOYAGEURS CUP CHAMPIONS

TORONTO, September 5, 2003 - With their 2-0 victory over Calgary on Sunday, August 31, the Montreal Impact sealed their second consecutive Voyageurs Cup championship. The three points from the victory put them a single point ahead of the Toronto Lynx in the Voyageurs Cup standings, ending a second close race for the trophy.

The Voyageurs will award the Voyageurs Cup trophy to Montreal before their first home A-League playoff game against the Rochester Raging Rhinos on Sunday, September 7. Kickoff is at 4 PM at the Claude Robillard Sports Complex.

The Voyageurs Cup is the only trophy for top-level professional soccer in Canada. The Cup is awarded annually to the Canadian A-League team that finishes with the best record from regular season matches against the other Canadian teams. Montreal also won the trophy in 2002, the Voyageurs Cup's inaugural year.

The last two Voyageurs Cup matches of the 2003 season took place over Labour Day weekend. Toronto kept their hopes alive by defeating Calgary 2-1 on Friday, August 29. Toronto’s goals were scored by Sebastian Barclay and Mauricio Vincello, with Shaun Wimble responding for Calgary. The win temporarily put Toronto in first place, but Montreal had their fate in their own hands when they faced Calgary on Sunday. Their two goals were scored by Patrick Leduc and Canadian international Martin Nash.

Montreal finished with 13 points in the Voyageurs Cup standings, having recorded four wins, one loss and one draw. Toronto ended with four wins and two losses, a close runner-up for the second straight year. Vancouver finished a strong third with 10 points from three wins, two losses and one draw, and Calgary fought valiantly again but finished without winning any points in the competition.

The scoring title for this year’s Voyageurs Cup was won by young Canadian international Ali Ngon, who tallied 5 goals for Toronto. He was transferred to Montreal late in the season but did not score any Voyageurs Cup goals for his new team. Eduardo Sebrango and Zé Roberto both scored three goals for Montreal in the competition to share the runner-up place for the scoring title.

The 2004 Voyageurs Cup competition is likely to expand to include the new A-League franchise slated to begin play next season in Edmonton. The addition of a fifth team is expected to make the competition for the Cup even closer.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2003 VOYAGEURS CUP WILL BE CLAIMED THIS WEEKEND

TORONTO, August 29, 2003 - The 2003 Voyageurs Cup concludes this weekend with two matches that will determine the winner of the second annual championship for Canada's top professional soccer teams.

The Montreal Impact and Toronto Lynx are the only two teams still in contention for the trophy, and each will host the Calgary Storm this weekend.

Montreal hold a one-point lead over Toronto in the Voyageurs Cup standings, as well as the tiebreaker should the two teams finish even on points. Therefore, Toronto will win the trophy if they defeat Calgary and Montreal does not, and otherwise it will stay with the defending champions in Montreal.

Toronto will host Calgary on Friday at 8 PM Eastern at Centennial Park Stadium. This match will be broadcast live on television by Fox Sports World Canada.

Montreal will host Calgary on Sunday at 4 PM Eastern. This match will be simulcast live on radio and Web by Montreal's CJAD 800 AM (www.cjad.com) in English and CKAC 730 AM (www.ckac.com) in French. It will then be broadcast on television by RDS on tape-delay at 7 PM Eastern.

The previous set of Voyageurs Cup matches featured the Vancouver Whitecaps traveling across the country to face all three Canadian rivals. They began by eliminating Calgary from Voyageurs Cup contention with a 2-1 win on August 4, thanks to late goals by Jason Jordan and Carlo Corazzin in response to an early one by Calgary’s Nicolas Zuniga.

Vancouver then needed wins in Montreal and Toronto to keep themselves in contention for the Voyageurs Cup. However, they fell short in Montreal on August 6 as they were only able to draw 1-1, on a late equalizer by Nick Dasovic following an early goal by Montreal's Zé Roberto. Vancouver concluded their trip with a 1-0 win in Toronto on August 8, the lone goal scored by Carlo Corazzin.

Vancouver finished their Voyageurs Cup schedule with a record of 3 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw for 10 points. They are currently even with Montreal on points but are behind on the tiebreaker.

Also to be settled this weekend is the 2003 Voyageurs Cup scoring title. Montreal's Ali Ngon leads with 5 goals, though he scored all of these while still with Toronto earlier in the season. Montreal’s Ze Roberto is not far behind with 3 goals. 2002 co-winner Eduardo Sebrango also has 3 goals for Montreal, but he is out for the remainder of the season with an injury.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VOYAGEURS CUP ENTERS HOME STRETCH

TORONTO, August 3, 2003 - With the 2003 Voyageurs Cup past the halfway point, the Vancouver Whitecaps’ trip across Canada in the coming week marks the start of the do-or-die stage of the competition for both western teams, and could end with the clinching of the second annual championship for Canada’s top professional soccer team.

Vancouver and the Calgary Storm have their second meeting of this year’s Voyageurs Cup in a holiday Monday match in Calgary. Later in the week, Vancouver travel east for matches against the Montreal Impact on Wednesday and the Toronto Lynx on Friday.

Vancouver and Calgary kick off the week’s pivotal games at Foothills Park in Calgary on Monday, August 4 at 8:30 PM Mountain. Vancouver’s visit to Claude Robillard Sports Complex in Montreal on Wednesday, August 6 begins at 7:30 PM Eastern, and will be simulcast live in French on radio and Web by Montreal’s CKAC 730 AM (www.ckac.com). The week ends with Vancouver and Toronto meeting at Toronto’s Centennial Park Stadium on Friday, August 8 at 7 PM Eastern.

Montreal and Toronto lead the Voyageurs Cup standings with nine points each, while Vancouver have three and Calgary have none, so the results of this week’s games are vital to the western teams’ chances of challenging for the trophy.

The previous two Voyageurs Cup games, played July 16 and 24, served only to intensify the competition. Toronto battled to an exciting 3-2 overtime win in Montreal, with the 2003 tournament scoring leader Ali Ngon, who ironically has since been transferred to Montreal, converting the tying and winning goals. Nikola Vignjevic scored the other for Toronto, and Eduardo Sebrango and Sita-Taty Matondo tallied for Montreal.

In the west, Vancouver earned their first points of this year’s tournament with a 2-0 victory at home to Calgary, with goals from Nico Craveiro and Oliver Heald.

Both Montreal and Vancouver have an opportunity to clinch the Voyageurs Cup by the end of the week. Three straight wins for Vancouver in the coming week could seal the cup for them, while Montreal will be this year’s winner if they defeat Vancouver on Wednesday and Vancouver defeats Toronto on Friday.

If the trophy is not won this week, Calgary will play a crucial role in determining the eventual winner as they visit Toronto and Montreal at the end of August for the last two matches of the 2003 Voyageurs Cup.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WEDNESDAY’S VOYAGEURS CUP GAME PIVOTAL

TORONTO, July 15, 2003 - Toronto travel to Montreal for their last meeting of the season on Wednesday, one which may be pivotal in determining this year’s Voyageurs Cup winner.

Montreal stand first and unbeaten in the Voyageurs Cup table with nine points after playing all of their away games. Toronto’s sole loss to Montreal followed by two wins in the west at the beginning of this month put them on six points.

A Montreal win on Wednesday would almost eliminate both Calgary and Vancouver, and would put them in the driver’s seat for a second straight Voyageurs Cup title. Toronto, meanwhile, badly need the win to stay in contention for their first title.

Toronto’s Canada Day weekend games earned them their six points, first with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Vancouver and then with a strong 2-0 outing at Calgary.

Three of Toronto’s four goals came from Canadian international Ali Ngon, vaulting him to the top of the Voyageurs Cup goal scorers list. However, Eduardo Sebrango and Zé Roberto of Montreal both stand on two goals; the next game could also be key in determining this year’s top scorer. Nikola Vignjevic scored Toronto’s other goal, while Vancouver’s was a penalty kick converted by Oliver Heald.

Wednesday’s match kicks off at 7:30 PM Eastern at Claude Robillard Sports Complex, and will be simulcast on radio and Web by Montreal’s CJAD 800 AM (www.cjad.com) in English and CKAC 730 AM (www.ckac.com) in French.

The Voyageurs Cup resumes a little over a week later when Calgary visit Vancouver on Thursday, July 24. Both teams remain pointless in the tournament’s standings, and are hoping for a draw between Montreal and Toronto on Wednesday to improve their chances of catching up to the leaders. A win for either team on the 24th could put them back into the race. Kickoff is at 7 PM Pacific at Swangard Stadium.

The Voyageurs Cup will return at the beginning of August when Vancouver play their three away games over five days.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BIG CANADA DAY WEEKEND IN THE VOYAGEURS CUP

TORONTO, June 27, 2003 - The Toronto Lynx will make their season's sole western trip to play the Vancouver Whitecaps and Calgary Storm over this Canada Day long weekend as all three teams hope to make up some ground on the leading Montreal Impact in the Voyageurs Cup.

Defending champions Montreal currently head the standings with a 9-point lead over each of their rivals. However, Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver have played only one Voyageurs Cup match each, so they have plenty of opportunity to close the gap with the Impact, starting this weekend.

Montreal have opened their lead thanks to a very successful western trip nearly one month ago. The first match was a close 1-0 victory over Vancouver on May 30, the win coming from a late goal by Abraham François.

Then came a clear 4-0 victory over Calgary on June 1, with two goals from 2002 Voyageurs Cup joint top-scorer Eduardo Sebrango and singles from Impact captain Mauro Biello and Canadian international Sita-Taty Matondo.

Montreal’s western wins, together with their victory in the tournament opener in Toronto at the beginning of May, put them in a strong position with only their home matches left to play.

Toronto visit Vancouver in the next Cup match on Saturday. Both teams have had similar A-League seasons thus far, with the Whitecaps standing on 18 points and the Lynx on 15. The Whitecaps have proven to be strong at home (4 wins and 1 draw in 6 matches) while the Lynx have performed better when playing away (3 wins and 1 draw in 7 matches), making this an intriguing encounter. Kickoff is at 7 PM Pacific at Swangard Stadium.

Toronto then visit Calgary for a Canada Day match on Tuesday. The Storm are eager to win their first Voyageurs Cup points after a disappointing showing in the 2002 edition. With 14 points in the A-League so far this season they are nearly even with the Lynx, and recent results against Seattle and Vancouver have bolstered their confidence for their upcoming matches. Kickoff is at 1:30 PM Mountain time at Foothills Park.

Following these matches, the Voyageurs Cup returns in July when the two western teams and the two eastern teams renew their local rivalries.

PIVOTAL WEEKEND IN THE VOYAGEURS CUP

TORONTO, May 29, 2003 - This weekend, the defending Voyageurs Cup champions, the Montreal Impact, make their season's sole western trip to play the Vancouver Whitecaps and Calgary Storm. These are only the second and third matches of the 2003 Voyageurs Cup but are pivotal in determining this year's Cup winner.

The Impact have an early opportunity to establish a significant lead over their Cup rivals, who also include the Toronto Lynx. The Impact started by taking all three points in their 2-0 win over the Lynx in the opening match. Considering that they will have completed all of their away matches after this weekend, two more positive results would issue a serious challenge to Montreal's rivals.

Particularly intriguing is Friday's match at Vancouver, as both the Whitecaps and the Impact are considered favourites to win the A-league championship this year. Vancouver remains undefeated at home with 3 wins and 1 draw in league play, while 7 of the Impact's 8 league points were won away from home. Kickoff is at 8 PM Pacific time at Swangard Stadium. The match will be broadcast live in English on Fox Sports World Canada and in French on RDS.

Montreal then move on to Calgary to play the Storm on Sunday. After losing all of their matches in last year's competition, the Storm will be looking to extend their strong A-league start this season into their first Voyageurs Cup match of 2003. Calgary's first games of the season included important wins over Seattle and Portland, and they are rapidly approaching last year's point total. Kickoff is at 3 PM Mountain time at Foothills Park.

Following these two matches the Voyageurs Cup will take its longest break of the season as it is nearly one month until the next matches over the Canada Day weekend, when the Toronto Lynx repeat Montreal's western trip.

MONTREAL IMPACT WINS THE INAUGURAL VOYAGEURS CUP

VANCOUVER -- With a convincing 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. on Sunday, the Montreal Impact became the inaugural Voyageurs Cup winners. Montreal finished its six-game schedule with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss for 15 points, moving two points ahead of Toronto (4-1-1, 13 points) in the Voyageurs Cup standings. The Voyageurs will present the trophy to Montreal at a remaining home game.

Only one week earlier, Toronto had the opportunity to claim the trophy when it faced Montreal in Toronto on August 18 with a six-point lead in the Voyageurs Cup standings and Vancouver and Calgary already eliminated.

Having beaten the Impact 2-1 in overtime in Montreal on August 7, the Lynx needed only a draw against Montreal to put themselves out of reach. But the Impact turned the tables by winning by the same score in Toronto. With their fate in their own hands, Montreal took control with two more straight wins against Calgary and Vancouver.

In a close game on August 23 against the Calgary Storm, which had yet to gain a Voyageurs Cup point, Montreal scored two goals in second-half injury time to win 3-1. With a victory over Vancouver on August 25, Montreal won the title. Vancouver's loss put them in third place with a record of 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses for 7 points. Calgary finished last in the standings with six losses.

With three goals in the last three games, Montreal's Eduardo Sebrango joined Toronto's Nikola Budalic as the top scorer in the Voyageurs Cup with 4 goals each. The Impact's Ze Roberto also scored in each of the last three games and finished with 3 goals along with Toronto's Ryan Lucas, who joined the team halfway through their schedule, and Vancouver's Niall Thompson.

The Voyageurs will present the Voyageurs Cup trophy to the Montreal Impact at their last home game of the season on September 1, 2002.

TORONTO MAINTAINS VOYAGEURS CUP LEAD, ELIMINATES VANCOUVER

A tough battle in Vancouver on August 2 saw Vancouver eliminated from the Voyageurs Cup competition after playing four games.

Toronto arrived in Vancouver with three straight Voyageurs Cup wins, and the 1-1 result left Vancouver with a 1-2-1 record. Vancouver can now only tie Toronto on points in the Voyageurs Cup standings, and their record of one loss and one draw against the Lynx gives the Lynx the tiebreaker edge in the final standings.

The result ensures an exciting end to the competition, as Montreal's final three Cup games will decide whether Toronto can retain its lead. The Impact visit each of the other Canadian teams between August 18 and 25, and three wins are enough for Montreal to take the inaugural title.

First, Montreal will meet Toronto at Claude Robillard Stadium on August 7. The Toronto-Montreal matches will both be crucial in the race for the Voyageurs Cup title. A Toronto win will put plenty of pressure on Montreal, who will need points from their final three games to take the Cup. But two Impact wins over the Lynx will seal the title for Montreal.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TORONTO LEADS RACE FOR THE VOYAGEURS CUP

TORONTO--At the midway point of the Voyageurs Cup competition, the Toronto Lynx has taken a convincing lead for the prestigious trophy. Building on their 1-0 win over Vancouver on July 19, Toronto dismantled the Calgary Storm 6-0 this week to head the table with nine out of nine possible points. They will attempt to defend this lead through their current road trip, which includes Voyageurs Cup games against Vancouver (August 2) and Montreal (August 7).

Meanwhile, the Montreal Impact sit second with two games in hand over the Lynx. A win at home in their next game (August 7 against Toronto) will maintain the Impact's perfect Voyageurs Cup record, but Toronto's current +9 goal differential is a daunting prospect for Montreal. The last three games of the competition all involve Montreal, in what promises to be a gruelling week from August 18 to 25.

The Vancouver Whitecaps stand third with a win and two losses, and as Montreal's opponent for the final Voyageurs Cup game, Vancouver remains a strong contender for the cup. However, each remaining game is crucial for the 'Caps, particularly their August 2 match against Toronto (which will be televised live on Fox Sports World Canada, hosted by Peter Shaad and former Canadian international and World Cup veteran Paul Dolan).

The Calgary Storm have seen their Cup aspirations evaporate with their fourth loss in as many games, falling 6-0 to Toronto on July 30. With home games against Montreal and Vancouver, though, Calgary still has a vital role in the outcome of the Cup.

Toronto's Nikola Budalic of the Lynx took the scoring lead in the competition with two of the six goals that the Lynx put past the Storm. Budalic's total stands at 4, with Vancouver's Niall Thompson in second place with two goals.

In other news, the Voyageurs have wrapped up their fundraising campaign, with the total collection far exceeding their expectations. The Voyageurs Cup trophy has been selected and ordered after an online poll of the Voyageurs. The Voyageurs are considering other uses for the excess funds, including the creation of additional awards to honour success in Canadian professional soccer.
