COURTESY OF THE HAMILTON AVALANCHE HAMILTON SUFFERS DEFEAT TO OTTAWA June 16, 2007 Hamilton, ON - Despite brilliant play from Keeper Rosanna Couture (Oakville, ON), the Hamilton Lady Avalanche suffered a 7-1 loss at the feet of Ottawa Fury’s Jodie Taylor, (Birkenhead, ENG), who scored three goals and added two assists in regular season action on Saturday afternoon. Early in the first half Couture made a great save but, was unable to control the rebound that fell at the feet of a wide open Taylor who knocked it home just five minutes into the game. The Fury would score again in the ninth and 20th minutes, taking a 3-0 lead into half. Hamilton had two great scoring opportunities in the first half but, was unable to solve Fury Keeper Vanessa Philips-Bossart (Vernon, CT). Chiara Greco (Hamilton, ON) had the first chance on a free kick from 30 yards out. The midfielder sent a powerful shot towards the top right corner of the net but, Philips-Bossart made a sensational diving save, deflecting the ball out of harms way. The second saw defender Leslie Martin (Oakville, ON) head a ball just wide from an Alyson Heydorn (Ancaster, ON) corner kick. Heydorn would lead Hamilton into the second half with the teams’ only goal, taking a terrific pass from Michelle Edgar (Niagara Falls, ON), splitting the Fury defense and sliding the ball past Erin McNulty (Winnipeg, MB) in the 51st minute. The Fury’s Annie Hamel scored her second goal of the game in her 65th minute to once again take a three goal lead. The Avalanche seemed to respond positively, continuing to attack. Consecutive defensive breakdowns in the 76th, 77th, and 78th minutes hung Couture out to dry, giving Ottawa a 7-1 lead and slamming the door to a Hamilton comeback shut. Couture made 10 saves while facing 24 shots for Hamilton. Hamilton will host the Vermont Voltage on Sunday, June 17, 2007. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Brian Timmis Stadium. Source: Michael P. Hall
