COURTESY OF THE HAMILTON AVALANCHE June 24, 2006 - 07:00 PM Media Release For Immediate Release Lady Avalanche earn a draw against Comets June 24, 2006 Hamilton, ON - A goal in the 86th minute from Laval’s Virginie Jacques tied the game at 1-1 erasing the slim advantage Hamilton had taken early in the 2nd half. The Lady Avalanche, playing against the Northern Division’s 2nd place team, looked confident, consistently attacking and pressuring the Comets’ defence. The first half saw both teams play excellent defensively, to keep the sheets clean for their Keepers. Hamilton Keeper Stacey Van Boxmeer made a number of key saves to keep Hamilton in the game and bail out her defence. From offence to defence, a Chiara Greco free kick from 30 yards out sailed just over the bar for Hamilton’s closest chance of the first half. Just three minutes into the second half, Danya Barsalona walked around an outstretched Marie-Pier Bilodeau to place the ball in the net, her 2nd goal of the season. Following the Barsalona goal, Laval came to life, applying greater pressure with every passing minute. Les Comets had two great chances, alone one-on-one with Van Boxmeer. The Canadian National Team Keeper was up to the task and made two terrific saves before being substituted out late in the game. Van Boxmeer was having trouble seeing the ball late in the game, providing W-USL rookie Nicole Mercer an opportunity to prove herself. Hamilton’s defence was unable intercept a cross to Jacques, who sent the ball past the outstretched arms of 6’0 Mercer. Hamilton, sitting in 4th place, will look to improve on their 3-4-1 record tomorrow when they host the always powerful Ottawa Fury.
