The 2003 Computer Science Curriculum

Introduction and Background

This website describes major curriculum changes that were introduced in 2003. Students who are completing a program that they began prior to Fall 2003 can use this website to find out how the curriculum changes affect them. Please contact the Undergraduate Office for further advice.

Introduction

Major changes have been made to the Computer Science undergraduate programs and courses for the Fall of 2003. The official description of our revised programs and courses are available in the Arts and Science Calendar. This web page expands on those official documents by providing some background about why the changes were made, how they will be phased in, and how to plan your program of study.

Background

In the Winter of 2001, a group of faculty members was put together by the chair of the undergraduate committee to propose improvements to the undergraduate curriculum. We concentrated our efforts on medium-scale improvements, mainly in the core courses. The new curriculum described in this web site is the result of many months of work, discussions, meetings, and of circulating several proposal documents to the department for approval.

Between June 2001 and March 2002, we held a number of meetings with various faculty and student groups to discuss the proposals. These groups include: undergraduate students (through the CSSU), discipline representatives from Scarborough and Mississauga, faculty who teach courses with statistics prerequisites, Lecturers, and tenure-stream faculty in various areas (AI, Software Engineering, Systems, HCI, Numerical Analysis, Databases, Theory, Graphics, Distributed Computing and Networks, Information Systems). During the Spring and Fall of 2002, the new curriculum was discussed and approved by the Undergraduate Committee of the Department of Computer Science, and finally by the Faculty of Arts and Science.

We are very excited about the new curriculum; we think it makes some excellent improvements. There will inevitably be some bumps along the way as we phase it in. We will try to keep these to a minimum, and we hope this website will help.
