Computer Science Students' Union seeks nominations for a First-Year Rep
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Around 1/3 of all CS students are either: first-year students, enrolled in
a 100-level CS course, or in their first year of a CS program. But a
great many of these students don't even know where the CSSU office is!

This population has been historically under-represented in the CSSU, yet
are perhaps the people who could benefit from the CSSU the most.

Specific responsibilities would include liaising with the instructors of
1st year courses to keep the junior students informed of CSSU events.
With the permission of said instructors, personally visiting first-year
classes would be beneficial.

More mundane tasks might include posting information in the cdfpc labs, as
well as posting to cdfpc-readable newsgroups. Given that a large portion
of test-library requests come from first-year students, and that the 1st
year rep is already liaising with the first-year professors, some
test-library duties may be included.

Candidates should be sensitive to junior student issues, and be outgoing
and energetic. They also should be a member of the CSSU body next
year (enrolled in a CS course and/or CS program). Ideally the candidate
would themselves be either a first-year CS student, or a TA for first-year
CS courses.

"Youth is our future" is a very appropriate phrase for the CSSU -- to
ensure a positive Union in the future, we need to reach out to the junior
students of today.
