CSC 148H: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE

Old Announcements -- Week 2

Friday 17 January: 12-1 office hour cancelled

Today's 12:00-1:00 TA office hour is cancelled. If you need help today, please go to Diane's 3:00-4:00 office hour.

Thursday 16 January: Cheap C/C++ on your PC

You can get a version of the gcc compiler for your PC either (a) on a roughly $30 cdrom available at the bookstore (the Walnut Creek GNU cdrom) or (b) by downloading it for free from the Web.

Thursday 16 January: C students: FAQ list

Students in the C section may find this FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) list helpful.

Thursday 16 January: Changing csc148 lecture sections

If you decide to change lecture sections within csc148, you must make an official change through your registrar's office. Even sections taught in the same language will not share midterm tests. You must write the midterms with your own tutorial group from your own lecture section.

Thursday 16 January: OOT Software

Question:Can I use my friend's OOT software to do my csc148 assignments?
Answer: It would be a violation of copyright to make your own copy of your friend's software. In addition, if your friend bought the software through the special sale for 1st year csc students at UofT, they bought it under the following agreement, which appears on the sale form: "This package will be for personal/individual use only (one per student). Resale is not permitted." The phrase "personal/individual use" means that no one else is permitted to use the software.
So your friend may give or lend you his or her copy as long as it was not bought through the sale, and duplicates are not made,
Question:Can I use the OOT software that comes free with the csc108 textbook by Grogono?
Answer: You may, but be warned that it is two releases old, doesn't have the tracing feature, and is known to contain some bugs. (For example, floating point calculations can give incorrect results.) Also, it does not come with the free upgrades and technical support that you get if you buy OOT through Holt Software Associates. (You do get these if you buy OOT at the sale price.)

Thursday 16 January: OOT Sale tomorrow

The OOT software sale, announced in class, is taking place tomorrow, Jan 17th, from 2:00pm - 7:00pm. This is the only sale date planned for the term. Click here to see the sale flyer, including prices and sale location. You are to bring a printed copy of the flyer with you to the sale,

Thursday 16 January: Chris Beck's page

One of the TAs for the C section of the course, Chris Beck, has a 148 page the will be of interest to any students in the C section of the course. Click here to see it. (It's also listed under "Course Information" below.)

Wednesday 15 January: Assignment 0 -- Case sensitive?

Question: Should our program be case sensitive?
Answer: Yes. That is, your program should treat lower case and upper case versions of a letter as different. This is actually easier than making the program insensitive to case, because you can just compare two characters for equality without having to convert them to the same case first.

Tuesday 14 January: Latest batch of accounts

A new batch of accounts was activated today. See my corkboard for a complete list of all the currently active 148 accounts. The next batch will be created in a week.

Tuesday 14 January: Your account isn't working?

If your csc148 is not working, check the list of accounts posted outside SF 2302. If you're on the list, it means you do have an account, and it will tell you exactly what your account name is. Try logging in again, and be very careful not to mix up 0 and O, or 1 and l. If you still can't log it, come see Diane.

If you are not on the list posted outside SF 2302, there are two possibilities. You may have enrolled in the course some time last week, in which case your account wasn't created with the original batch. I expect to hear about the new batch, which should include you, today. I'll post the revised list. If you enrolled before last week, then something is wrong. It's probably just that you accidentally enrolled in 148 in the wrong term. Check your enrollment through your Registrar.
