Purpose of the online homework

It's easy to focus all of your efforts in this course on the challenging assignments, but there is some basic homework that you need to do in order to get ready for the assignments to come. This online homework is intended to help you do that.

Because the online homework is interactive, we hope it will be fun to do. It shouldn't be very time consuming. And we encourage you to work on it in groups, and to use it as a starting point for study sessions with other people in the class. Just be sure that each person logs into the homework page and submits the answers. (Your other assignments, however, you must do on your own.)

Getting access to the homework

Only students currently enrolled in the course have access to the homework pages. In order to identify you, and to make sure that you get credit for the answers that you give, you will log in to the homework page.

Your login id is the same as for the CDF PC lab. Your password is, initially, your student number. For greater security, you can change your password to something better by clicking here.

Note that this homework account is not the same as your CDF PC lab account -- they just start out with the same id and password. Your homework account is, however, the same as the one you'll use for accessing your marks online.

How your homework will be marked

Four of the online homework assignments are to be handed in for marks. All questions will be marked for participation. Once you've given your answer, you will be able to see what the right answer was and get further feedback.

There will be at least two other online homework assignments that will not count for marks. We are suggesting dates by which you should do these in order to stay on top of the course material.

If you have a problem

If you cannot log into the homework pages, first confirm that you have really enrolled in the course. (Sometimes there is an error during registration.) Then make sure that you aren't making a typing mistake. The most common ones are mixing up the letter l and the number 1, or the letter O and the number 0, or neglecting to type any zeros at the beginning of your student number. If you still have a problem, contact the course coordinator, Diane Horton, at her next office hour.

If you have some technical problem while doing the homework, contact the course coordinator, Diane Horton, at her next office hour.
