CSC 148H: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE

Announcements from Week 1

Welcome to 148!
Friday 12 September: First online homework is ready!

The first online homework, on the topic of parameters in Java, is ready. Follow the link from the main 148 page. Note that, if you haven't talked about objects and references in your lecture yet, do the material starting at "Passing Object References" later.

Friday 12 September: Simple Java examples

The csc108 web page includes some simple Java examples that you may find helpful. Look under Java Links on our 148 page.

Friday 12 September: Permanent change to Fich office hours

Professor Fich's Monday 2-3 office hour has been reschedule to Tuesday 1-2, for the remainder of the term.

Thursday 11 September: Standish text

As many of you know, the bookstore has run out of copies of Standish. A new shipment is expected to arrive a week today, on the 18th. In the meanhwile, copies of the key Appendix A (on Java basics) are being made and will be available to students for free. I expect to have those on Tuesday.

For those who don't want to wait until Tuesday to see that appendix, I will put two copies of the appendix in the csc148 course folder, on reserve at the Engineering library (2nd floor of Sandford Fleming). They will be there by 3:00 today.

By the way, UniText has some copies of Standish available as of this morning. (Thanks to the student who let me know of this.)

Wednesday 10 September: AO starter code is ready

The starter code for assignment 0 is now available on this web site. Note that the program requires a command-line argument that is not described in the assignment handout -- you must say "file" if you want input to come from a file or "standard" if you want it to come from the standard input. See the comments at the top of the Life class.

Tuesday 09 September: Tutorials start this week

Unlike many other courses, tutorials is csc148 start this week. See the green course information sheet (handed out in lecture and also available on the web) to find out your tutorial location. You may not switch tutorials without getting permission from your instructor.

Tuesday 09 September: Students in the 10am tutorial #4

Your tutorial is in CR 404, as listed on the course information sheet. But the sheet doesn't say what "CR" is (because I didn't know!). CR stands for Carr Hall.

Sunday 07 September: Your cdf-PC accounts

We expect that your cdf-PC accounts will be ready on Wednesday. I will post an announcement here as soon as I've heard that they are ready.

Friday 05 September: Office hour change for Tuesday

Diane's regular office hour from 3-4 on Tuesday September 9th will be held one hour earlier that day.
