CAIMS*SCMAI 2023 Awards

CAIMS*SCMAI Research Prize: Chen Greif, U. of British Columbia

The CAIMS*SCMAI Research Prize is presented to Professor Chen Greif in recognition of his outstanding contributions to numerical linear algebra and its applications. His ground-breaking research and leadership have had a profound impact on scientific computing and will continue to influence and inspire applied mathematicians for years to come.

CAIMS-Fields Industrial Mathematics Prize: Sivabal Sivaloganathan, U. of Waterloo

Professor Sivabal Sivaloganathan has made significant contributions in several areas of applied mathematics and is very clearly a leader in the field of mathematical medicine. He has established productive collaborations with leading clinicians at some of the top research hospitals in Canada and was the founding Director of the Centre for Mathematical Medicine at the Fields Institute in Toronto. Earlier work on models of the brain led to a better understanding of the disease, hydrocephalus, and its treatment. His more recent work on the use of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) as a therapeutic modality for the treatment of cancers led to the development of mathematical models to understand the effects of HIFU energy deposition in biological tissue.

CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award: Adam Stinchcombe, U. of Toronto

The CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award is presented to Professor Adam Stinchcombe in recognition of his contributions to high-performance computational methods for studying partial differential equations with applications in biology.

Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award: Justin Wan, U. of Waterloo

The Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award is presented to Professor Justin Wan, in recognition of his outstanding service to CAIMS/SCMAI as Secretary for two terms, as Director, as an active member of Membership Liaison Committee, as organizer of the Annual Meeting and the Canadian Symposium on Numerical Analysis, Chair of IMACS International Symposium, and founding Associate Editor of the CAIMS/SCMAI journal, and for developing and updating the processes for elections, communications, documentation and virtual conference management.

Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award: Abba Gumel, U. of Maryland

The Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award is presented to Professor Abba Gumel, in recognition of his outstanding service to CAIMS/SCMAI as Secretary for two terms, Director, and Chair of the Membership, Publications and Doctoral Dissertation Awards Committees, as two-time organizer of the Annual Meeting, organizer of summer schools and workshops, for initiating and contributing to the creation of the Annual Meeting Handbook, and for being an exemplary ambassador for Canadian Applied Mathematics through multiple international recognitions and leadership in international development projects.

Cecil Graham Doctoral Dissertation Award: Saifuddin Syed, PhD from U. of British Columbia

By analyzing the broadly applied optimization method Parallel Tempering, Dr. Saifuddin Syed developed new optimization algorithms and proved that they are expected to perform better than the original. The impact of Dr. Syed’s work was beautifully illustrated in the application of his new methods to producing a high-resolution image of a black hole using data from the Event Horizon Telescope, among other applications.
