Assignment 4. Due November 14 at start of the tutorial. The purpose of this assignment is to better understand the use of internet search engines. For each of the following questions (i.e. ``information needs''), use your favourite search engine(s) to try to obtain the correct answer. For each question, keep a detailed log of your use of the internet. More specifically, for each question, indicate the queries you presented (and what search engine was given that query) and for each such query specify: a) how many responses to the query were ``considered'' (i.e. you looked at the title and/or excerpt) b) how many of the pages that you considered were then accessed and how many contained the correct or relevant (i.e. seemingly helpful for answering the question) information c) what further hyperlinks were accessed; provide an ``access tree'' for the hyperlink accesses as explained by Karolina in the tutorial. d) whether or not the search was successful and if the search was unsuccessful or successful but difficult, explain why you think this was a difficult ``information need'' to satisfy Discuss any special search engine features (beyond key word search) that you used. Are there any additional search features you would have liked to have had available? Finally, for successful searches explain why you are or are not confidant about the correctness of the result you obtained. In particular, did you ever obtain two different answers to the question? Questions: A) In what year did the actor John Wayne (``the Duke'') graduate high school? B) What is the origin of the phrase "hot potato"? C) Which Canadian Prime Minister lived longest (i.e. died at the oldest age)? Note: this question is not asking about the longest serving prime minister. D) What is the annual rainfall of countries in western Europe? (Or you can restrict the question to a single country, say Germany.)
