Abstract

The term biodiversity refers to a life net with connections between living species and their environment. The study of this discipline is related to biological evolution, taxonomy and ecology. Nowadays there exists an increasing interest in gathering and analyzing biodiversity information, initially, for scientific administration of natural resources.

Due to the large amount of biological diversity and to the complex interaction between species and environment, the researchers dedicated to the study of the biodiversity are often compelled to make several simplifications in order to carry out analysis. Some of them refers to the management, representation, storage and access to the acquired information.

In this work we present a prototype system for accessing biodiversity databases using a Peer-to-Peer architecture, with the purpose of creating a repository maintained and conformed by different parties (mainly the community of researchers on the field), with the objective of favoring the exchange of biodiversity information.
