1995-96 OWIAA Hockey Championship:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Queen's University hosted the OWIAA (Ontario Women's Intercollegiate
Athletic Association) hockey finals this past weekend (February 17 &
18, 1996). The top 4 teams in the league qualified for this final
tournament. It was 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd in semi-final action
on Saturday. The University of Guelph and the University of Toronto
won their semi-final games, advancing them to the championship game
on Sunday.

It was a close battle between York and Laurier in the Bronze medal game
on Sunday. York was leading 2-1 with less than 2 minutes to go, when
Stephanie Kay scored a power-play goal to force the game into
overtime. A regular 5 minute overtime period was played, and the score
remained tied at 2. The game then went into a 15 minute sudden death
overtime period. Amy Turek scored for Laurier near the end of the
period, to claim the bronze medal for Laurier.

The gold medal game also turned out to be very suspenseful. There was
no score after the first period of play. Defending champion Guelph was
first to get on the scoreboard early in the second period of play.
Toronto fought back hard, but it wasn't until 5 minutes remaining in
the third period when Lori Dupuis (Randall, Hunter) scored to tie the
game at 1. Two overtime periods were played without any score, and
then with 10:58 minutes remaining in the third overtime period, Laura
Schuler (MacMillan, Hunter) put the game away for the Blues. The goal
came when Guelph tried to clear the puck out of the zone, but it was
stopped by MacMillian on the point. She quickly gave a pass to Hunter
who was partially covered in front of the net. Hunter slipped the puck
by the defender to Schuler who was alone in front of Guelph goalie Jenn
Dewar. Schuler controlled the puck, and deked to her forehand and put
the puck behind the goaltender.
