General Information

From 1921-1971 women's hockey was part of the Women's Interuniversity Athletics Union (WIAU). From 1971-97 women's hockey competed under the auspices of the Ontario Women's Interuniversity Athletic Association (OWIAA). In 1997, men's and women's sports merged under the general classification of Ontario University Athletics (OUA).

There are currently 9 women's hockey teams in the OUA. Each team plays a 20 game schedule. There is a Eastern and Western division. The top three teams in each division qualify for the OUA playoffs, which takes place using a "Final Four" format.

Since the 1997-98 season, the winner of the OUA championship competes at the Canadian National CIS championship.

New November 1996: Lori Dupuis has just passed Andria Hunter (me! :-)) in the all-time scoring race! Ah, but in more games though, Dupes! tee hee hee. :-)

Thanks to Dennis Kehoe from the OWIAA office at the Ontario Sport Centre in North York for providing this information. More information will be available shortly.

Dennis also informed me that the current head coach at the University of Toronto, Karen Hughes, holds the longevity record, having played a total of 95 games during her career as a player for the Varsity Blues. And this was before the days of 20 game seasons!
