I am a 49 year old grandmother who has been playing since my 20 year old daughter got me into it during the last Winter Olympics in '92. I am with the San Diego Women's Hockey Club, the Heartbreakers out of Iceoplex in Escondido, CA. We are looking for women of all ages, from 16 yrs to whatever, to build enough teams to have a functioning Women's League. We have an Intermediate and a Novice level team so far. Many of our members are brand new players. We have coaching for all levels. Many of our players are Moms with little ones too, so that's no excuse not to play. We also have women from as far away as Thousand Oaks and Temecula. Hi Andria - great pages I'm from new Zealand and you probably dont know but we have Womens Ice Hockey and Womens Roller Hockey here - roller hockey is big with 7 teams in New Zealand and we play at the Nationals as well as regular tournys and leagues - our the 'Panthers' won the nationals last year. Our ages range from 16 - 32 so a wide age group. Our Ice team is based in Auckland and I think there is also a womens Ice team in the South Island. We practise regularly and play against old timer teams etc - but we are entering the u19 contact league this year. We are also playing an u16 team from Canada in June sometime! Thought this might be of interest and hope that you could update you International places with our name New Zealand in it! I think your efforts serve to have not only enhanced the field of womens hockey in promotion that it be taken as a serious sport, but also, your a solid role model for young girls and their aspirations to successfully compete in the future. Additionally, the crux of this email is regarding Shannon Miller ??? I'm looking for info, pics etc...on the current head coach for Team Canada. Whatever might have been mentioned on T.V. and/or including an interview with her, if it took place I missed it ? I periodically watched the canadian channel I recieve via my cable company because their broadcasting of the olympics was much better overall (and certainly of the womens hockey games)..the language barrier left me quite limited. Lastly, although my heart is full with Team USA's gold medal victory, being a US citizen, born and raised I really commend Team Canada (women's hockey) for their efforts. I think they worked hard and will surely be the #1 contender for the US in 2000. I appreciate any info you can send my way regarding my request (Shannon Miller). Right now I'm involved in a project to found a high school girl's varsity team since the high school has a wonderfully talented guys' team, but no recognition for the women! School teams provide funding for several of the aspects of hockey that make it the expensive sport that it is. This funding includes coverage of ice rental, transportation costs, tournament fees, and coaching fees. This would allow more young women to participate in ice hockey! I am 22 years old and play goalie on a team in Waterloo Iowa. Girls hockey isn't real big here yet so we don't play very many games. We range in age from 9-24, were not a ruff team, but have some skills. We have only been a team for two years, but I have been skating for about 4. We just got back from a tournament in Dubuque Iowa where we played 3 teams. We beat the Dubuque team 5-0, my first SHUTOUT!!! We beat the Iowa State University team 3-2, and won the game aginst Pekin Ill 5-1. We are looking for teams to play and may hold a tournment of our own next season. Caroline Blanchet named new McGill hockey coach The McGill University Women's Hockey Club is pleased to announce it has named Caroline Blanchet as its new head coach. Blanchet brings plenty of coaching experience to the position. She guided Quebec's under-18 team to a National Championship in 1997 and also served as assistant coach with Quebec's Senior team that won a National title in 1995. "We're extremely excited to have Caroline join our program," said manager Dan Madden. "Her coaching abilities and experience at the provincial and national level will be a great asset. She has been involved with many championship teams and knows what it takes to be successful." Along with her on-ice duties, Blanchet will be responsible for recruiting players to the university. "We want to attract more players from within Quebec and I strongly believe that Caroline can help us to achieve this goal," said Madden, who will continue to recruit throughout Canada and the United States. Blanchet has experience in the Quebec University Women's Hockey League. She coached the Collegiate Champion St. Laurent Patriotes last season and spent 3 seasons as assistant coach at Concordia. Last month, Blanchet was an on-ice instructor at Team Canada's evaluation camp in Montreal and has also been an evaluator with the National Team program. Blanchet replaces Alyson Fournier who has gone south of the border to be an assistant coach at Yale University. Fournier coached three seasons following a five-year playing career at McGill. Bergeron named assistant with McGill There will be plenty of coaching experience behind the McGill University women`s hockey bench this season. Head Coach Caroline Blanchet has wasted no time in nameing Anny Bergeron as an assistant with the club. Both have worked together before. Bergeron has spent three seasons as assistant with Quebec's senior team and head coach of Ferland-4 Glaces, a "AA" senior women's team in Repentigny, near Montreal. I have been unable to find any other person or institution that has done data based research on female hockey. Do you know of any research of this kind? The Institute for Hockey Research (IHR) just finished a five month study of the On-Ice and Off-Ice Performance Characteristics of Female Hockey Players. We tested 86 players ranging in age from 6 - 61 years old. I will be presenting these data on October 1 & 2, 1998 in Mankato, MN. at the Northlands chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine. I will also be presenting the same data in Seattle in June 1999 at the World meetings of the American College of Sports Medicine. We think that the IHR may have been the first Institution to present data based research on female hockey when we presented data on the 1996-97 National team. We collected these data at the Olympic Oval High Performance Female Hockey Program. These data were presented in June 1998 at the World meetings of the American College of Sports Medicine in Orlando. The IHR is very interested in the enhancement of performance for female players. We plan to continue our female hockey research agenda during the season by following three teams (Ages: 9 - 16) by testing the players pre-season, mid-season and post-season. Myself and my colleagues at IHR as well as Tina Geithner, Ph.D. from Gonzage University (Spokane, WA.) will be conducting this research. We hope that the results from these two studies will help us design future studies designed to test training protocols to enhance performance of female hockey players. I wanted to let you know that the University of Massachusetts at Amherst has a great club (intramural) women's hockey team. We went to the National Club Hockey tournament and placed fourth. Unfortunately, we do not get any recognition of our success from our school, and would appreciate it if you could put us on one of your pages. I noticed that you have the top 25 club teams, and UMass-Amherst is not listed, even though we placed 4th in the tournament.
