I am a female hockey player who currently plays in a Men's league in Cincinnati, Ohio. My team is the "Roadmen" and we are currently the league champions here. I have also recently begun to play for a women's team (we finally got enough women here to have a line!) We have only practiced togethor for a month and have not selected a name yet, but will be doing so shortly. We have about 12 gals involved plus Goalie so far, our core players (including) me are experienced, intermediate to advanced level players, but we are inviting all women, including beginners to come out and join us! This is my first experience playing with and against women and so far I've really enjoyed it and found the competition level to be quite satisfying. I also have a daugher, Bianca , who is 7 years old and I've had her playing since she was 5. I coached her mite team this season and I took the only other 2 girls who wanted to play and put them togethor for my team. I am really hoping to become alot more involved in developing Girls Hockey here in Cincinnati, as it is badly needed. I found coaching Mites to be a tremendously rewarding experience and I'm happy to know that once my own playing days are over that I'll derive alot of satisfaction out of coaching. So--- from a dad, who's also a coach and certified referee, THANK YOU to all of you who have paved the way for my youngest daughter to pursue what, at this point, is her love of sport, in a wonderful and exciting game that should, and does, transcend gender and age (I'm still playing at 47 years of age). If Hilary wants it, I too hope that some day the ranks of Tara Mounsey, Cami Granato, Stephanie O'Sullivan, and all the rest of you, will include the name of Hilary Sherlock in the Team USA Colors for the Olympics in 2018. Next stop: A women's professional NHL, to restore the beauty, grace, and skill to the goon-and-violence infested NHL. I played ringette (similar to hockey) for two years in high school. After those two years, we switched over to hockey. Minnesota became the first state to sanction girl's hockey at the high school level. I was apprehensive at first, but then I realized the awesome sport that I was missing. Our team did well, and became the 1995 First Ever Girl's State Hockey Champions. It was awesome. Now I am attending the United States Air Force Academy. I am playing soccer here, but unfortunately there is no women's hockey team. I skate and play pick up games at least twice a week, but it just isn't the same. I want to have a team to play on here. I guess they tried two years ago, but it fell through. I know there is enough interest, and we could have a good team. If anyone has any suggestions, help me out! In the meantime, Let's Play Hockey! There are, I believe, four prep teams...Lawrenceville, Princeton Day School, Stuart Country Day, and Pingry School...Additionally, Princeton High School has the only public school girls team in NJ history... I coached the team for its first two seasons of existence (as well as coaching the boys team). I was followed by a former player from Princeton Univ. for one season and last season Tony Willard (whose daughter is one of the team's best players) took over....The team has steadily improved and plays a 6-8 game schedule The prep teams play more games but our team has continually closed the talent-gap and has consistently drawn 30-35 players.... I found most of your aricles quite interesting but...when you wrote about the individual awards at NARcH why were the winners of the skills competition eliminated? Though the Ca teams lack the experience of ice the Canadians have it was 2 teenage CA girls that won the skills. As you can guess I am the mother of the 14yr you came in second to in the breakaway shootout! (Lori DiGiacomo). She loves the game and figured skated to level 5 freestyle before playing roller hockey as the only girl among 250 boys. She will be skating for Team Calf Ice Hockey this year but claims that roller hockey is more fun and easier to get a game going.In all fairness all the WINNERS should be mentioned.
