What a great resource! You have tons of info on your pages. I have always loved hockey, but did not get a chance to play as a kid because I lived in a town in Illinois where basketball (make that MENS basketball) ruled. Guess it must be my quarter Canadian heritage (my grandmother, who is now 92 and lives in NS, played women's hockey back in the 1920s!) I just wish I wasn't so old (34) and that there was more opportunity for ice time. We used to have a great woman's night (drop in) in Tacoma but it's since been cancelled because we lost our coach. Some of the women, myself included, now play in the Tacoma men's league, C tier - but we need to develope our skills and don't have the opportunity to practice. There just doesn't seem to be enough interest to form a women's team that could be in the same league as the Seattle Wings/Orcas. Bummer. Information about guest, Christine Neumiller ... Hi--while visiting a friend in Wyoming over Christmas, we went out and bought some hockey skates and sticks on a whim, shovelled off a pond, and played for a good while. I'm hooked. I LOVE it! I want to play. But I live in Austin, Texas. The only ice hockey here takes place at an ice rink in a mall and right now there are only men's and pee-wee leagues. Apparently some women do play in the men's leagues. I'm small (5'2, about 110-115 1bs). I'm pretty atheltic --swam competetively and was ranked nationally in age group swimming--but just an okay skater-- haven't ever done it much, since I was a child. So-- my question is ... This is the third year that my high school has had a team, but the first year was only a club team. The one thing I wish is that the boys hockey team could support us more. How do mens to womens sizes convert, or does someone actually make "women's" skates? Anyone know of a resource to refer me to about how to get an ice rink built in your area? We have no rink in our city, nearest is 1/2 hr away. I've done a little research in talking to the local parks department. I'd like to hear from someone who's gone through the process of spearheading a rink building. Surely this has been done many times over. Also, I am looking for links to russian ice hockey today without much success. Anyone know where I shoudl be looking? I've found other countries represented with home pages, but nothing on russia. I play for The Northern Blades Women's Team in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. I've been playing for three years. Iadore it. I also assistant coach this year for my two daughter's mite level ("A" and "C") team. Ialso adore that! If I would have known all that I was missing in Women's ice hockey I would have started this many years ago. I am also a masters student in nursing at the UW-Madison. I commute weekly. I am a big promoter of Women's hockey in my community and would love any posters, pictures stats...thing I can post at our rink to promote women's hockey. I have high hopes for my daughters' futures in ice hockey. I also have two sons who play at the Bantam "A" and Peewee "A" level. My hubby is involved too...he is a zamboni driver. Our winter season is very full as we play home and away. I was unable to enter the Badger State Games held in Feb. in Eau Claire due to three on my children involved in other cities in the state. Hi Andria, I am so grateful to you for taking the time to do this. The site is amazing and since finding it I have been checking out EVERYTHING. My daughter is on full scholarship for "Volleyball" at Providence College. Sherryl was an all sport athlete in high school and can't get enough sports. The volleyball season is quite short compared to Canadian University ball. When the hockey season started she begged her coach to let her try out for the varsity hockey team. She hadn't played organized hockey in four years. Her coach reluctantly allowed the try out and she made the team. The team is very good but at the moment losing games they ought to be winning. Because Sherryl has been training only a few weeks her ice time is limited for now but she is a determined individual. Jackie Barto, the coach at Providence sees her potential and agrees she will be a player. When she did play hockey in Mississauga (REP) she was a forward and is now learning defence. It's a tough adjustment. I am off to Montreal to watch the team play against Concordia next weekend. Concordia has a great team I suspect.(re:your pages) so hopefully they can play them close at least. I appreciate what you have accomplished here and keep up the good work. We met you at the PGHA banquet several years ago. I am interested in your views on ammending the rules for women's hockey to include limited contact. I see far too many calls against defencemen who are just trying to get in the way of attacking forwards. They are not trying to bodycheck - just slow them down. I am on a team called the "Shooters". The team is out of southern CA. Last year we won the division II state tournament in Simi Valley, CA. We just recently formed the first all womens league in So. CA. We are getting a lot of publicity over it. Currently, we are playing in both a womens and mens league to prepare ourselves for the upcoming tournament in Toronto, Canada. Hopefully we will do well in the tourney. As for myself, I have been playing for almost 2 years now and am enjoying the game very much. I play a stong center position, though I am the 2nd smallest on the team at only 5'2" and 115 lbs (I have big wingers). I never thought that I would ever play hockey and that there weren't many other girls that did either, but now that I'm actually doing it, I know I'll never stop. It's nice to see that womens hockey is getting the attention it deserves. I'll never forget the day that I was on the net & found a story about Gretchen Helms' point of view on the state tournament. I was reading the article when I came across a familiar team name, mine. I didn't know that my team had made the net. It was cool though to hear others talk about my team. I guess it was when I was printing copies for my team mates that I realized how much hype there was about women & hockey. Little did I know we would be doing interviews & T.V. shows about it (The Mike & Mattie Show). I also met the whole team at the St. Laurent Shopping Mall in Ottawa and saw the game with the U.S. team in Ottawa. A great site. I am a bonified hockey nut. I play an average of 4 times per week, and have, for most of my 30 years. I am looking into starting up a company, and would appreciate your feedback. Instead of a group of players, male or female traveling to Canada for a clinic, would it not make more sense for an instructor to be brought in to Australia. This way, I could work with 3 or 4 complete teams, as opposed to 1 group. The cost per person would be very low. The second issue,is hockey equipment. There is an endless supply of used hockey equipment here in Canada. Would there be a store, or hockey association intrested in importing used equipment ? Any feedback you might be able to give me would be appreaciated, especially contacts at home. I learned to skate two years ago and have completed three season (each season is about 4 months) with the Houston Adult Amateur Hockey League. We are pretty horrible, but have alot of fun. To date, I have scored one career goal, but don't think that is too bad for a farm girl from Texas. Right now there are about 10 women in Houston playing ice hockey. There are a number of girls playing on the boys teams, and the sport is growing in popularity. We hope that we will one day have enough women playing to have a women's team. (although we would have to travel a VERY long ways to find a team to play against!) Thanks for all the effort you put into your pages. Well, I became interested mainly because my sister got involved with hockey, and after one year of hockey, she quit Ringette all together because she thought it was "too slow" and lacked the "intensity" of hockey. Anyways, since my own hockey career (yeah right!) was going nowhere I decided to take up coaching, and have been coaching girls hockey for 2 years. However, it's really difficult to encourage new girls out here to play. In particular, most of the girls are already comfortable with playing ringette, a perceived "less violent" sport. However, those that play both for a period of time generally perfer hockey more. So I guess it'll take time for Ringette to be phased out (as I have heard has happened in Ontario). Hopefully, the Pacific Rim this week will help stir up some interest and much-needed publicity in female hockey. Incidentally, my sister is trying to get autographs of her complete Classic 1994 hockey set signed, and while she managed to get the 12 players who have cards who are currently on the Team Canada Roster, she would like to try and get the rest signed. I was wondering if it would be possible to send you your card and a self addressed stamped envelope, and you could autograph the card at your convenience. It'd really mean a lot to my sister. I have played hockey in the intramurals for 3 years although last year was a bit of a ride off due to schedule conflicts and ongoing problems with my back. I got interested in playing hockey because I thought I had finally found a sport where a lot of the participants would be beginners like me. Wrong! I soon realized that this country abounds with women who were basically born with skates on. When I first started I had never worn hockey skates or even held a stick in my hand. We had one practice - just enough get a grasp of the rules and then it was off to play. I pretty well suck (it would be great to get ice time for team practices) but I still love it. It is a great sport and I think a lot of women would benefit from self-confidence and assertiveness they would gain from playing.
