Tutorial 10 Lecturer: Ray Reiter Tutor: Andria Hunter =========== 990317 Wed@1pm CSC148, Spring 1999 Tutorial notes, T10 ================================================================== Topics: ------------------------------ - midterm #2 Info for you - In my class I have almost finished trees; I have binary search tree ops to do, which I cover tomorrow. Picking up the tests -------------------- Each instructor will contact their own TAs about picking up the tests. How to conduct the test ----------------------- Same as last time: What to do: o Have the students spread out in the room, ideally with one empty seat in every direction around them (if there is room). But don't let them all sit far back where it's hard to detect cheating. o No aids are allowed, not even calculators (as if they'd help!). Have them put all books etc under their seats or to the side of the room or something, so that there is no possibility to sneak a peak at notes. o Hand out the exams one per person, making sure that no spare ones are left around -- they provide a great way to later cheat. (Return all spares to your instructor afterwards.) o Hand out exams face up so that students can fill out their name etc while they wait, but do not permit them to open the exam and see questions until you tell everyone they can start. o Make sure students all start at the same time. o Don't allow _any_ talking once you have started handing out the exams. You must be very strict about this. o Just before they start to write, tell them to feel free to ask a question by raising their hand. o Do not allow any funny business during the exam. Don't sit at the front and work -- keep any eye on them. Walk around periodically to help curb temptation. This also can make them more comfortable asking a question. (Try to wear "quiet" shoes.) o During the test, count the number of students present. o Give them a warning when there are 5 minutes left. o When the exam is over, announce that they are all to stop writing. Don't allow any talking until you pick up _every_ exam. o Try to collect the exams quickly, so that no one feels the last people have an advantage. Pick up the exams in the same order that you distributed them, otherwise the last-handed-out and first-handed-in people get less time than everyone else. o Count the number of exams handed in and make sure it is the same as the number of students who were there. Try to set students at ease during an exam. But: try to make sure that the exam situation is as fair as possible and do NOT tolerate any inappropriate behaviour.
