****************************************************************************** Submitted for Nomination to Sports Hall of Fame in Peterborough, Ontario by Terry Hunter. ****************************************************************************** PROFILE FOR ANDRIA HUNTER ****************************************************************************** Andria started her hockey career in the 1976-77 season when she played on a boy's team in the Peterborough Minor Hockey Association (PMHA) Novice house league. The following three seasons she played in the Peterborough Girls' Hockey Association (PGHA) house leagues. From 1980-86, she played for the village of Keene of the Otonabee Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) in the United Counties Girls' Hockey League (UCHL). Keene claimed the All-Ontario Championship 5 times during this period. From 1981-86 she also played for Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School (TASS). TASS won the Kawartha Girls' High School hockey championship 4 out of these 5 seasons. Andria was also very active in a number of other sports. In addition to hockey, she played soccer, field hockey, badminton, softball, ball hockey, cross country running, field lacrosse, track, and volleyball. In her final year at Thomas A. Stewart high school, she played on 7 different school teams, as well as being an executive member of the Student Athletic Association (SAA), and still managed to graduate with the highest average in her grade 13 graduating class of 83 students. In the spring of 1986, while finishing grade 13, she was offered a full-tuition women's hockey scholarship to attend the University of New Hampshire (UNH). During her time at UNH, she received the rookie of the year award in 1987, the Wildcat Winners Club Scholar-Athlete Award in 1989, and the Alumni Association Student-Athlete Award in 1990. While at UNH, she played on the Eastern Conference Athletic Association (ECAC) championship team during her first year (1986-87), and she captained the ECAC championship team in her final year (1989-90). UNH finished second in the ECAC Championships during Andria's other 2 years playing for UNH. She was the leading scorer for UNH for her first 3 years and second highest scorer during her final year. She earned 170 points in her 4 years at UNH. In 1990, she graduated from UNH with a BSc in Computer Science (cumulative GPA of 3.81 on a scale of 4.00, ranking 5th in her graduating class of 308 students). After graduating from UNH, Andria started a Masters Degree in Computer Science at the University of Toronto. While attending the University of Toronto, she played for the Women's Varsity Blues hockey team in the Ontario Women's Interuniversity Athletic Association (OWIAA) league. The Varsity Blues won the OWIAA championship 4 of the 5 years that Andria played on the team (1990-91, 1991-92, 1993-94, 1995-96). She was selected to the OWIAA 1st all-star team for all five seasons that she has played in the league. She has also been awarded the prestigious T-Holder Academic Excellence Award, for recognition of both academic and athletic excellence, four times. Andria is second on the OWIAA hockey all-time career points list with 60 goals and 63 assists for a total of 123 points in 55 games. She is second on the OWIAA career most points for one season list, with 53 points in 15 games during the 1995-96 season with the Blues. Andria has participated in the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) from 1990-2002; she played part-time while playing Ontario university hockey and full-time afterwards. This league was originally the Central Ontario Women's Hockey League (COWHL) Senior AAA division, but it was renamed the NWHL on January 6th, 1999. In 1990-91, 1991-92, and 1993-94 she played for the Scarborough Firefighters; in 1995-96 she played for the Toronto Red Wings; in 1996-97 she played for the Newtonbrook Panthers; in 1997-98, 1998-99, and 1999-00 she played for the Mississauga Chiefs; and in 2000-02 she played for the Mississauga Ice Bears. Her teams have claimed five silver medals at the Senior AAA Ontario Provincial Championships, losing to the North York Aeros each time. She was named rookie of the year for the COWHL league during her first year in the league. She was selected to the league's first all-star team for the 1998-99 season (20 goals & 21 assists in 40 games). She also received the NWHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player award for the 1998-99 season. She had only two penalties in five seasons! She ended her NWHL career in 2002, finishing 3rd overall in league scoring that season. Andria played for a team called "DHC Langenthal" in Switzerland during the 1992-93 season. She was the highest scorer in the Women's A league in Switzerland with 59 goals and 28 assists (87 points) in 20 games. DHC Langenthal finished second in the Swiss National Women's A league that season. In the summer of 1991, Andria was on the team that won the gold medal at the Canadian National Ball Hockey Championships, held in Edmonton, Alberta. She was on the silver medal winning team in 1992 (Richmond, BC), the bronze medal winning team in 1993 (Ottawa, ON), and the silver medal winning team in 1994 (St. John's, NFL). Andria has participated competitively in inline hockey since 1995. Her team, the Toronto Tornado, placed second at the 1995 North American Roller Hockey Championship (NARCh), and claimed the gold medal at the 1996 NARCh. In 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000, her team, the Toronto Franklin Typhoon, placed second at NARCh. In 1997 and 1999, her team won the Canadian Hockey Inline national championship. In 1997, 1999, and 2000 her team won the USA Hockey InLine Cup. She was chosen as the 1997 Inline Hockey News amateur female athlete of the year, having been the top scorer at all 5 major tournaments in which she participated in 1997, scoring a total of 92 points (49 goals, 43 assists) in 26 tournament games. By far, Andria's greatest achievement was her selection to play for Team Canada at the Women's World Hockey Championships in 1992 and in 1994. At the 1992 World Championship, which was held in Tampere, Finland from April 20-26, 1992, Team Canada won the gold medal. Andria was the third highest scorer overall in the tournament with 5 goals and 4 assists (9 points) in 5 games. Team Canada also won the gold medal at the 1994 World Championship, which was held in Lake Placid, USA from April 11-17, 1994. In 2002, Andria was selected to participate for Canada in the first ever Women's World Championship for Inline Hockey that took place in Rochester, NY, USA from July 19-23, 2002.
