This paper proposes MACAW: a media access protocol for wireless
LAN's by making a good amount of adjustment to MACA, a media access
protocol for PARC's radio network. Some basic and important issues
regarding the design of wireless MAC protocols are discussed as MACAW
is presented in detail.

In the design of MACAW, a multiple access rather than token-based
access control is first justified. The background of MACA is then
provided. MACA adopts an RTS-CTS-Data mechanism rather than CSMA
which is not suitable in the wireless settings, where the
transmission range of each station is separate. Next, the authors
present their new protocol MACAW. In MACAW, several important
modifications to MACA have been made, including: backoff algorithm,
multiple stream model, DS, RRTS, Multicast, etc. This is a generally
a well-written paper that extensively explored the details of design
issues of wireless MAC.
